DENVER – The University of Denver mens lacrosse team was recognized numerous times in recently administered pre-season polls.
Aside from DU’s 2015 freshmen class earning a No.20 ranking, the Pioneers were also tabbed No. 7 in the Preseason Coaches’ Poll and were also projected as the fifth-best team in the Face-Off rankings.
Denver also received individual recognitions as senior Mark Matthews (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada) was listed on IL’s Player of the Year Watch List, along with being tabbed as a preseason First-Team All-American. Junior Chase Carraro (Louisville, Ky.) earned Second Team honors while senior Alex Demopoulos (Canton, Conn.) and sophomore Jeremy Noble (Orangeville, Ontario) made the third team. Junior Cameron Flint (Georgetown, Ontario) was named to the preseason All-American honorable mention list. Matthews, Carraro and Flint were also selected as Preseason All-ECAC selections, as the Pioneers are picked to finish first in the conference in 2012.
Other Denver highlights included a No. 28 strength of schedule nationally, along with the Pioneers’ contest with Duke at the Mile High City Classic as the marquee game on their schedule. DU’s attack and midfield units were also recognized as the attack unit was tabbed as the third-best while the midfield was tabbed as the second-best unit in the nation.
Notable fresh faces that will suit up for DU this season include highly touted freshmen Sean Cannizarro (Cazenovia, N.Y.) and Tyler Ekeroth (San Diego, Calif.), both of whom made appearances in IL’s Power 100 Freshmen. Cannizarro earned a No. 97 ranking, while Ekeroth rounded out the list at No. 100.
The Pioneers continue exhibition play in January, as the men’s lacrosse team will take part in the 2012 Champion Challenge on Sunday, Jan. 29 at 11:30 a.m. MT, playing the U.S. National Team at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
