OMAHA, Neb. -- Assistant Coach David Molinelli has taken over as head coach of the Papillion LaVista boys varsity lacrosse team.
Molinelli, 48, replaces Derek Koll, who led the Monarchs to a 3-7-1 record last season. Koll led the Monarchs to a 5-5 record this season before he and his wife relocated to Salt Lake City, Utah.
Originally, Koll planned to only miss one game because of the move and return to coach in the state tournament. However, Koll was not able to return, and Molinelli took over on an interim basis for the final three games.
Molinelli led Papillion LaVista to two victories in three games and a third-place finish at the state tournament.
"This team has a good balance of leadership and youth," Koll said. "And I think Dave is more than capable of coaching them."
Molinelli did not play high school or college lacrosse, but he helped found the Papillion LaVista lacrosse team and has been an assistant under Koll for two seasons.
"I've learned a lot from Derek, and from helping my kids play for the last six years. I'm excited to help grow the sport at Papillion," Molinelli said.
