Junior attackman Pat Gregg scored the game-winning goal with 2:30 remaining in overtime lead St. Thomas Aquinas to a 12-11 victory over Blue Valley West in a Missouri Scholastic Lacrosse Association Kansas City-Kansas Conference game Thursday.
Gregg took a feed from senior middie Eric Pageler, dodged a defender and fired a low, off-stick-side bounce-shot from 10 yards out to put St. Thomas (3-4, 3-0 Kansas City-Kansas Conference) into first place in the league standings.
Senior middie Mike Healy finished with a team-high six points on three goals and three assists, Pageler added four points on two goals and two assists and senior middie Austin Martin had three points on two goals and one assist. Gregg and sophomore middie Chris Storm each scored twice, and senior attackman Derek Stein added two points on a goal and an assist for St. Thomas.
In a losing effort, Trevor Timmerberg had a game-high seven points on five goals and two assists for Blue Valley West (6-5, 3-1), which has lost two straight and four of its last five.
The game was tied, 3-3, at the end of the first quarter, Blue Valley West led 6-5 at halftime and St. Thomas Aquinas led 9-8 going into the fourth quarter. St. Thomas led 11-10 late in regulation before Blue Valley West scored the equalizer with 1:05 remaining.
But St. Thomas regrouped in overtime to score the winner and claim its first win over Blue Valley West in the program's history.
"It's a huge win," St. Thomas Coach Chris Berger said. "It's one of the hurdles that we've been trying to overcome for the past couple years, and it was one of our goals for the season."
