LINCOLN, Neb. -- Sophomore attackmen Ryan McCartney scored six goals and added an assist to lead North Dakota State University to a 9-5 victory over Nebraska-Omaha in a Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association game Saturday morning.
Junior attackmen Trevor Fortlin scored two goals, and junior middie Peter Stevenson added another for the Bison (1-0), who won their season opener.
UNO (0-3), which lost its third straight, opened the scoring, but the Bison responded with five unanswered goals to take control of the game.
The Mavericks closed within two goals early in the third quarter, but they couldn't corral McCartney, who restored NDSU's four-goal lead when he scored twice in a span of less than thirty seconds. UNO scored again toward the end of the third quarter, but an unstoppable McCartney put another in the net and dished an assist to give the Bison a five-goal lead with less than five minutes remaining in regulation.
"We have a lot of new kids this year, so I really wanted to step up and be leader for them," McCartney said. "I'm just really proud of the way we came out and played today."
In a losing effort, sophomore attackmen Bruce Hammond scored two goals and added an assist, and sophomore middie Christopher Moore scored two goals to pace the Mavericks.
"We played well, we just need to work on our shot selection," Hammond said. "Hopefully we'll get a few more in the back of the net next time."
