MEN: Westminster Routs New Mexico, Stays Unbeaten

February 17th, 2007

Junior middie Brad Watkins and freshman attackman J.T. Nebeker each registered three points to lead Westminster to a convincing 15-2 victory over New Mexico in a Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Conference game Friday afternoon.

Watkins scored two goals and added an assist, Nebeker recorded a goal and two assists and 10 different Westminster players scored. Freshman middie Nate Marino, junior middie James Brand, freshman middie Brian Wilson and junior middie Ben Haverkost all scored twice for Westminster (2-0), which won its second straight. Westminster freshman middie Brett Bird also had two points on a goal and an assist.

Westminster took control from the outset. Westminster led 6-1 at the end of the first quarter, 11-2 at halftime and 13-2 at the end of the third quarter.

Still, Westminster Coach Mason Goodhand said he felt his team started shaky before it gathered itself.

"We did a little bit too much ball watching today and didn't have enough ball movement," Goodhand said. "Our sticks were a little stale, and that's frequently what happens when you get off an airplane, run to the field and play. But we shook out of it by the second quarter."

In a losing effort, junior attackman Ben Nye scored once for New Mexico (0-1), which lost its season opener.

"New Mexico is a team in which most of the players were playing their second game," Lobos Coach John Westfall said. "Westminster belongs in the NCAA."
