OK HS: Lacrosse Gaining Popularity in Tulsa
February 1st, 2007
Oklahoma is so far outside the traditional lacrosse landscape, that sporting goods stores don't even sell lax equipment in the state.
But that obstacle hasn't stopped a dedicated group in Tulsa from forming a team that officials hope will become the cornerstone of a future high school league.
The Tulsa Youth Lacrosse Association's high school boys team has four games confirmed this year, already a 100 percent increase over last season, and it is working to add more.
Tulsa LC will travel to Springfield, Mo., to face two JV teams in March, and then play the Wichita Pioneers in a home-and-home series on March 31 in Wichita and April 14 in Tulsa. The club is also attempting to schedule games in Dallas against some Texas-based JV teams in April, Tulsa Youth Lacrosse Association General Manager Dustin Booth said.
This year's Tulsa team will have 20 players representing five different high schools. The team, primarily comprised of freshmen and sophomores, will be repping Holland Hall, Broken Arrow, Jenks, Union and Muskogee, Booth said.
The team will be coached by Tim Reidy, a Rockhurst Jesuit graduate who played at Mount St. Mary's, Booth said.
"I have a feeling we'll probably have two teams in Tulsa next year, and I'm hoping that there will maybe be two teams in the Oklahoma City area next year as well," Booth said. "My hope is that in the next two to three years, we can have a league in which Oklahoma City and Tulsa competes against each other."
