KAN HS: Wichita Pioneers Boys Vote to Go Varsity
January 10th, 2007
High School varsity boys lacrosse is coming to Wichita.
On Tuesday night, players with the Wichita Pioneers lacrosse club voted unanimously to field a boys varsity program after competing as a junior varsity team the last three seasons, head coach David Sherman said. Although the team is based in Kansas, Wichita is expected to join the Missouri Scholastic Lacrosse Association for the 2007 season.
Sherman, 37, will be the team's head coach after sharing that role with David Kenny last season. Sherman played four seasons of college club lacrosse at Wichita State from 1989 to 1992 as an attackman, he said.
"I'm enthusiastic and excited," Sherman said. "I think it's the right move. We've got eight seniors on the team this year, and they've committed to a five-day-a-week practice schedule. In the past, they've practiced two days a week."
