Adrenaline Showcase: Day 1 Recap
July 15th, 2011
The 2011 Adrenaline Showcase is officially underway here at Sonoma State University. The Showcase event, plays host to over 168 of the best western high school lacrosse players from over 12 different states and 3 Canadian Provinces. Also in attendance are over 65 collegiate recruiters from all three NCAA divisions and the MCLA.
As I arrive on the Sonoma State campuses around mid-morning, campers begin to stream into the check-in tables at a rapid pace. I recognize many of the players from the West Coast Starz and Under Armour West teams that had just been on the east coast, for two very successful trips for the western players. After checking in, the players receive a full set of uniforms courtesy of Adrenaline Lacrosse, along with a custom Warrior Lacrosse handle customized to the event.

Day 1 Rundown:
Team ADRLN 2-0
Team ADRLN would outpace Team Warrior 8-6 in their first match-up. Dean Dillenburg (Palos Verdes, CA 12’) would lead the way on attack with 2 goals. Kieran Eissler (Coronado, NV 13’) fresh off of his east coast tour, also came to play in wine country, making a nice hit in the first game while also chipping in a goal. Rising sophomore Hayden Ruiz (Santa Margarita, CA 14’) also had a nice pair of goals for Team ADRLN.
In their second game, against team Skillz, Team ADRNLN again overcame the competition early. Led by some great goaltending from So Cal netminders John McCaul (Coronado, CA 13’), and Zach Goodman (Chadwick School, CA 12’). The close defensive unit was led by rising junior Chris Carter (Torrey Pines, CA 13’), who caused several turnovers on the day. Offensively, Chris Severson (Bingham 12’) and Kieran Eisller (Coronado, NV 13’) had hat tricks on offense, while Kyran Clarke (Burnaby Mountain 13’) also chipped in a set of goals.
Team Inside Lacrosse 1-1
Team Inside Lacrosse had a tough time finding their rhythm in their first game, as attackmen Cody Bernstein (International Community, 12’) and Dakota Rholin (Great Oak, CA 12’) were the only two players to find the back of the net.
They fared much better in their second outing, beating Team Lax Recruits 7-4. Offensively, scoring was again led by attackmen Cody Bernstein (International Community, 12’) who had a set of goals. Jacob Rockwell (Westlake, CA 12’), Luke Hegeman (Westlake, CA 12), and Dakota Rholin (Great Oak, CA 12’) were all solid contributors on offense each tallying a goal. Defensively Jean Jacques Ntshaykolo (The Thacher School 13’) was dominant on close defense, while also tallying a goal in transition. Inside Lacrosse relied on some tremendous goalie play throughout the day from goalies Russell Bartle (Highland, AZ 13’) and Jared Bauman (Lincoln, OR 14’).

Team South Swell 1-1
Team South Swell won their first game of the day, beating Team Lax Recruits in a close 5-4 battle. Taylor Esoldi (Cathedral Catholic, CA 13’) got things going on offense, netting the first goal of the day. Midfielders Andrew Perkins (Torrey Pines 12’), and Jake Marcy (Lincoln, OR 12’) also had goals in the first half. In the net, Evan Powell (Great Oak, CA 12’) had excellent communications with his defense, while making several doorstep saves.
In their second game on the day, Team South Swell would fall to team WestSideLax in another close 9-8 game. Spencer Rotenburg (Lincoln, OR 12’) and Jerome Rigor (Foothill, CA 13’) would combine for 4 goals on offense, while Ben Cummings (Brophy Prep, AZ 13’) and Taylor Esoldi (Cathedral Catholic, CA 13’) would also add a goal each. Defensively Evan Powell (Great Oak, CA 12’) again quarterbacked the close defensive unit of Cole Bender (Palos Verdes, CA 12’), Justin Anthony (The Waterford School, 12’), Franklin Medlicott (Archbishop Murphy 13’) and Austin Matheny-Kawesch (Del Norte, CA 14’).
Team South Swell Player Taylor Esoldi
Team Warrior 1-1
Team Warrior lost their initial 1:30PM game by two scores against Team ADRLN, but managed to bounce back in their second game. Grant Clifford (Lincoln, OR 12’) started things out offensively for warrior scoring first, as Michael Ashworth (Lakeridge, 14’) also added a tally. Bryce Cady (Torrey Pines, CA 14’) made several nice first half stops in the net for Warrior, while Griffin Rockey (Santa Margarita, CA 14’) also contributed some great saves during the second half. James Finn Wells (Chapparal, AZ 12’) came alive in the second half, adding a pair of goals from the midfield.
In their second matchup, Team Warrior overwhelmed Team Powerade 9-5. James Finn Wells (Chapparal, AZ 12’) again had set of goals, while Grant Clifford (Lincoln, OR 12’), and Justin Anderson (Centennial, 14’) also added a pair of goals. Defensively, the San Diego duo of Max Thiele (Bishop’s School, CA 14’) and Eddie Glazner (Bishop’s School, CA 12’) added great size to the unit, while Carter Mannix (Juan Diego, 14’) and Aaron Madaisky (Holy Cross Regional, 13’) were solid as well.
Team WestSideLax 2-0
The team that I’m rooting for (WestSideLax) went undefeated in their first day of competition. In their first game, they beat Team Inside Lacrosse handily, winning by a 13-2 count. Midfielder Jake Woodring (Eden Prairie, MN 13’) led the way scoring 4 goals in his first game. Hunter Corpus (Coronado, CA 12’) added a hat trick while Trevor Garner (Oregon Episcopal, OR 12’) and Luke Graney (Juan Diego, 13’) each added a pair of goals. Defensively, Jackson Grimes (WestLake, CA 12’) and Jake Kennedy (Torrey Pines, CA 12’) made some great saves in net, holding team Inside Lacrosse to two goals on the day.
In their second game, Team WestSideLax battled it out against Team South Swell winning 9-8. Attackmen Abbot Pratt (Rancho Bernardo 12’) led the way on offense netting a hat trick in the first half, while Dakota Hollister (Mt. Baker Secondary, OR 13’) added a pair of goals. I watched again as goalie Jake Kennedy (Torrey Pines, CA 12’) made some great doorstep saves, igniting transition offense on the other end of the field.

Team Power Bar 1-1
Team Powerade split a pair of games in their first day of play. In their first matchup against team Powerade, team Power Bar won easily by a 13-6 count. Jack Perkins (Coronado, CA 13’) had a tremendous first half, scoring a hat trick on attack. Jack Pruitt (Skyline, 12’) also had a big game scoring 3 goals as well, while midfielder Michael Hernandez (Piedmont, CA 12’) had several nice dodges from midfielder setting him up for 2 goals. In a tremendous display of offense, Grant Gravitt (Faith Lutheran, NV 14’) capitalized off a quick feed from fellow attackmen Jack Perkins (Coronado, CA 13’) who relayed the hockey assist from midfielder Brock Ghelfi (Brophy Prep, AZ 12’). The rising sophomore goalies Cyrus Scott (St. Ignatius, CA 14’) and Shane Bracken (Oak Park, CA 14’) held their own between the pipes for Team Power Bar, collectively saving 14 shots.
In their second game, Team Power Bar would fall to Team Adrenaline 12-6 in a tough loss. Andrew Tien (Bishop’s School, CA 14’) and Jack Perkins (Coronado, CA 13’) again led the way offensively as both combined for four goals. Bennett Schafer (Torrey Pines, CA 13’) and Michael Hernandez (Piedmont, CA 12’) also chipped in goals.
Team Powerade 0-2
Team Powerade had a tough time finding their rhythm on offense and defense the first day. Powerade would lose their first game 13-6 to a talented Team Powerbar. however there were some bright spots. Willie Mort (Torrey Pines, CA 12’) has been tremendous on defense, and scored twice in transition bringing the ball coast-to-coast. Emmett Gormican (Coronado, CA 14’) has been solid on midfield scored after a crafty fake in the first half. Timothy Ashworth (Lake Oswego, OR 12’) has done great at the face-off x, scoring a in the second half. Rising San Diego senior netminders Reis Stanley (Coronado, CA 12’) and Tanner Zigrang (Bishop’s School 12’) have each shown flashes of brilliance in the net.
In their second game against warrior, close defensemen Willie Mort (Torrey Pines, CA 12’) would again take the ball the length of the field in transition and score, asserting himself as one of the most dangerous poles between the lines. Attackmen Spencer Smith (Brophy Prep, AZ 13’) had a tremendous outing, notching 4 goals, while Sam Langon (Monte Vista, CA 12’) also added a goal.
Team Lacrosse Recruits 0-2
Team lacrosse recruits would fight out two tough games in the first day of action. In the first game, attackmen Anthony Abbadessa (Desert Vista, 14’) and midfielders Austin Collins (Palos Verdes, CA 12’) and Connor Reilly (Thousand Oaks, CA 12’) each chipped in for goals. The defense held strong in this game, allowing only 5 goals in their initial outing. Goalies Caleb Pryle (Rancho Bernardo, CA 12’) and Ronald Pisano (Santa Margarita 12’) collectively had 10 saves in the net.
The second game was also a low scoring affair for both sides, Christopher Nye (Lincoln, OR 12’) had some eye-opening dodges on offense, finishing the game with a hat trick. Austin Collins (Palos Verdes, CA 12’) and Aron Azoff (San Juan Hills, 12’) also each added a goal for Team Lacrosse Recruits.
