IA-NEB BOYS: West Des Moines Valley Upsets Millard West
April 3rd, 2010
Senior attackman Cam Bostwick scored a game-high six goals to lead West Des Moines Valley to a 13-10 upset victory over Millard West in a Nebraska High School Lacrosse Association game Saturday afternoon.
Junior middie Dylan Griess added five points on two goals and three assists to help the Tigers (5-1) score the biggest win in the short history of their program and Iowa lacrosse.
Senior attackman Trevor Stoakes had four points on three goals and one assist, and eight-grade attackman Ted Crites finished with four points on a goal and three assists, as West Des Moines Valley put an end to defending Nebraska state champion Millard West’s 18-game winning streak in the teams’ first-ever varsity meeting.
Freshman middie Cole Griess rounded out the offense with a goal and an assist for the Tigers, who then beat Millard South, 10-3, later in the day to win their fourth straight game.
Defensively, junior goalie Hunter Couch saved nine shots.
“It’s great that we have a competitive team in Central Iowa,” West Des Moines Valley head coach Zach Zielonko said. “There might not be a lot of teams in the immediate area, but these kids came out to play.”
Millard West (4-1) came back to beat Millard South later in the day, but not before the Wildcats suffered their first defeat since March 21, 2009.
This is the first season of varsity lacrosse for West Des Moines Valley, which fielded a JV team in the Nebraska High School Lacrosse Association last season. It is one of just two varsity programs in the entire state of Iowa.
On Saturday, the Tigers led 9-7 at halftime before Millard West scored three unanswered goals to start the second half and take a 10-9 lead. But West Des Moines Valley kept its poise, scoring the game’s final four goals.
The Tigers finished the third quarter with three straight to go up, 12-10, and Stoakes put the final touches on a shocking upset when he scored to make it 13-10 with 4:15 remaining in regulation.
“It’s great for this program since it’s only our first year of varsity and second year as a team,” Zielonko said. “Now we’ve got a target on our back. We’re going to have to come out and play every game the same way we played that one.”
