MINN BOYS: Wayzata Wins Section 6 Title for First Time

June 5th, 2010

Sophomore attackman Eric Fong scored a game-high four goals to lead fifth-seeded Wayzata to an 8-5 victory over third-seeded Minnetonka in the Minnesota State High School League Section 6 championship game Friday night at Robbinsdale Armstrong High School.

Senior attackman Sean Keogh added a pair of goals to help the Trojans (11-6) win their first Section 6 title in school history and prevent the defending state champions from returning to the state tournament.

Wayzata has advanced to the state semifinals, where it will almost certainly face Benilde-St. Margaret’s next week. The seedings for the state tournament will be made official this weekend.

Two others scored single goals to round out the offense for Wayzata, which enters state on a four-game winning streak.

In defeat, sophomore attackman Chase Lienberger scored twice, and junior middie Parker Weinstock, senior attackman Ned Wolf and sophomore attackman Teddy O’Reilly all scored once for Minnetonka, which finished the season 12-4. The Skippers had their four-game winning streak snapped.

Wayzata led 3-1 at the end of the first quarter, 5-1 at halftime and 6-3 at the end of the third quarter. Minnetonka never closed the gap to closer than two goals in the fourth.

“I’m happy with our season, considering we lost 14 seniors from last year’s squad,” Minnetonka head coach Aaron Olivier said. “To make it back to the section championship game is an accomplishment for our team. I’m very proud of the way we played this season and the way we went down fighting.”

No respect

Where does this person get off saying it's obvious the Wayzata will play BSM? They had one of the toughest schedules in the state, have won 9 of their last 10 games and lost 7-9 to Blake after giving up 3 goals in the first 1:13. What was Eagan's score against Blake? 4-16 How about Totino-Grace? 3-14. . Wayzata beat a tough Champlin Park team, 3rd ranked EP and 6th ranked Minnetonka to get to state. If they aren't the number two seed, I would be very disappointed in the system.

Riiiiiiight

So, the brackets are out. Who does Wayzata play? That's right...Benilde-St. Margaret's. Shhhhhhhhhhhh
