WASH HS: State Rejects Bid to Make Lacrosse Varsity Sport
April 23rd, 2010
The state of Washington has rejected a bid to make boys lacrosse and girls lacrosse a varsity sport.
This marks the third straight year in which an effort to make lacrosse a school-sanctioned sport in the Evergreen State has failed.
Girls lacrosse went down to defeat by a 44-8 vote, with one abstention. Boys lacrosse did not even make it to the floor.
Only three states -- California, Colorado and Minnesota -- sanction boys lacrosse West of the Mississippi River. Four Western states -- California, Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri -- sanction girls lacrosse.
In all other areas, lacrosse is a club sport. However, some schools in areas where the sport is not sanctioned do consider lacrosse a varsity sport for their students.
