SoCAL BOYS: University City Starts 2-0 for First Time Ever
March 12th, 2010
University City is off to its best start in program history.
Senior middie Sami Misleh registered a game-high six points on three goals and three assists to lead the Centurions to a 13-9 victory over Montgomery in a CIF-San Diego Section game Thursday.
With the victory, University City (2-0) has won its first two games for the first time ever. The only other time University City won its first game of the season was in 2005, and in that year the Centurions followed up that win with 16 straight losses.
This season, University City upset Santana, 12-9, in its opener before scoring win No. 2 on Thursday.
Senior attackman Garrett Murawsky added four points on three goals and an assist, junior middie David Quan scored twice and senior attackman Austen Martin, sophomore attackman Dalton Bose and senior middie Marcos Whyte all finished with a goal and an assist.
Senior defensemen Matt Hamlin and Travis Giffen each scored once to round out the offense.
Defensively, sophomore goalie Chris Lee saved 12 shots.
Montgomery (0-1) dropped its season opener.
University City led 8-5 at halftime and pushed its advantage to as high as seven in the second half. The Centurions led 13-6 at one point in the fourth quarter before Montgomery scored the game’s final three goals.
“I think we’re just doing a phenomenal job,” University City head coach Bernard Steinberger said. “Defensively, we’re working harder than we have in the past. Offensively, we can work the ball around with consistency and take advantage of the other teams’ turnovers.”
