MEN: UCLA Scores 'Sloppy' Win Over Cal State Fullerton, 14-9

Sophomore middie J.R. Borneman finished with five points on two goals and three assists to lead UCLA to a 14-9 victory over Cal State Fullerton in an MCLA interdivisional game Thursday night.

Junior attackman Ryan Menefee added four goals, senior attackman Victor Poon finished with three points on two goals and an assist and freshman attackman Trevor Gudim scored twice to help the Bruins (1-1) bounce back from a lopsided season-opening loss to Cal Poly. Senior middie Andrew Morris had a goal and an assist for Division I UCLA.

Defensively, freshman goalie Martin Alonzo saved 19 shots.

Cal State Fullerton (0-1), which is ranked No. 9 in Division II, lost its season opener. But the Titans didn’t go down without a fight.

Cal State Fullerton led 4-2 at the end of the first quarter, the game was tied, 6-6, at halftime and UCLA led 9-7 at the end of the third quarter.

UCLA was clinging to an 11-9 lead late in regulation before the Bruins put it away with three goals in the final 2:23.

Menefee scored twice in 15 seconds at 2:23 and 2:08 to give UCLA a 13-9 lead, and Gudim scored with 21 seconds remaining to give the Bruins their final margin of victory.

Despite the win, UCLA head coach Jacques Bagley said his team must get better.

“I think we played poorly,” Bagley said. “We’re not consistent. We haven’t gelled as a team yet. We’re sloppy, inconsistent and we’re not disciplined enough. I thought Fullerton played real well.”
