SoCAL BOYS: No. 1 Junior Tyler Ekeroth Commits to Denver

The Western United States’ top-ranked junior has made his college choice.

Rancho Bernardo middie Tyler Ekeroth has verbally committed to play NCAA Division I lacrosse at the University of Denver.

Ekeroth, who was chosen as the No. 1-ranked junior by the WSL Elite 25 selection committee, said he also considered Maryland, Syracuse and Cornell before settling on the Colorado-based school. Ekeroth said he chose Denver because of its proximity to California, its academics and the fact that the program is now coached by Bill Tierney, who led Princeton University to several Division I championships.

“It’s closest to home,” Ekeroth said. “Coach Tierney’s a new coach, everything is real new and the class sizes are real small.”

Ekeroth said that the academic aspect of the school, in particular the smaller class sizes, were crucial to his decision. He also said that he’s excited about the possibility of the program reaching new heights under Tierney.

When he arrives on campus, he will be one of a number of West Siders who have gone on to Denver. Former Santa Fe Christian standout Hayden Schuette is now a freshman there, and Bellevue senior Cole Nordstrom committed there as well.

Ekeroth said there are things he needs to do to make a successful transition, and he intends to do them.

“Obviously, I need to get a little heavier, stronger and faster, but some of that is going to happen naturally,” he said. “I’m definitely working on my off-hand and knowing the game better. I still don’t know the game well enough.”
