TEX BOYS: Two Late Goals Lift St. John's Past Kingwood, 9-7
March 11th, 2010
Senior middie Reed Daniel registered a game-high four points on a goal and three assists to lead St. John’s to a 9-7 victory over Kingwood in a Texas High School Lacrosse League South District Division I game Wednesday night.
Junior attackman Jordan Schuler added three points on two goals and an assist, and senior attackman Zach Gaitz and junior middie-attackman Caldwell Flores each scored a pair of goals to help the Mavericks (4-3) bounce back from Monday’s upset loss to Memorial.
Senior attackman William Jewett and senior middie William Payne each scored once to round out the offense for the Mavericks.
Defensively, sophomore goalie Nate Whittle saved eight shots.
In defeat, junior middie Connor Castleman scored twice for Kingwood (7-4), which lost its second straight.
St. John’s led 7-5 at the end of the third quarter, but Kingwood scored back-to-back goals to start the fourth quarter to draw level.
About three minutes after Kingwood’s equalizer, Flores scored the go-ahead goal to give St. John’s an 8-7 lead. Jewett added insurance with 15 seconds to play.
“It’s a big win,” St. John’s head coach Sam Chambers said. “It gives us a boost of confidence going into our spring break trip to Florida. We didn’t fold like we did on Monday. We hung in there. I was proud of the guys.”
