MINN BOYS: Totino-Grace Wins First-Ever Section 4 Title
June 4th, 2010
Senior middie Nik Colpitts scored a game-high four goals to lead third-seeded Totino-Grace to an 8-4 victory over top-seeded Blaine in the Minnesota State High School League Section 4 championship game Thursday night at Irondale High School.
Senior middie Giuseppe Palmero added three goals, and senior middie Adam Gleason scored once to help the Eagles (14-3) win the Section 4 title for the first time in school history. With the win, Totino-Grace advanced to the state semifinals for the first time.
“Our boys are extremely happy about it,” Totino-Grace assistant coach Dan Soukup said. “This has been our goal all year. Right now, we’re just going to focus on recovering, and our first task will be getting the boys back to work tomorrow.
“We’re happy, but we’re not content.”
In the cage on Thursday, senior goalie Ryan Zeilinger saved 10 shots for Totino-Grace, which rolls into the state tournament on a eight-game winning streak.
In defeat, senior middie Tyler Mason scored a team-high three goals, and junior middie Michael Culshaw-Maurer added a goal and an assist for Blaine (14-1), which had its 14-game winning streak snapped. Blaine was making its first appearance in the Section 4 championship game.
The game was tied, 2-2, at the end of the first quarter, but Totino-Grace scored six straight goals from the start of the second quarter to put it away.
The Eagles led 5-2 at halftime and 8-2 in the third quarter before Blaine scored the game’s final two goals.
“Blaine was a really good, hard-working team,” Soukup said. “We had to work for everything, every single ground ball. It was a lot less comfortable than against Stillwater, but a lot more earned.”
