SoCAL GIRLS: CIF-SDS Semis: Torrey Pines Upsets Coronado

Senior middie Becky Trees registered a co-game-high six points on three goals and three assists to lead Torrey Pines to a 9-8 upset victory over No. 11 Coronado in a CIF-San Diego Section semifinal Thursday afternoon.

Sophomore middie Katie Trees added three goals to help Torrey Pines (17-6) advance to its first San Diego Section championship game since 2003. The Falcons, who have never won a CIF title, will next face No. 9 La Costa Canyon on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m., PDT, at Helix Charter.

In the teams’ most recent regular season meeting, Torrey Pines beat La Costa Canyon, 11-10, on May 18, ending the Mavericks’ 45-game winning streak against San Diego Section competition.

Third-seeded Torrey Pines enters the championship game on a seven-game winning streak.

“I think my team is really, really excited,” Torrey Pines head coach Amanda Bourquin said. “All season, in the back of our minds, we thought about being there. And game by game, we got better. It’s great for a team to goal-set like that and finally be there. We just have this great camaraderie on the team. They’re winning for each other.”

On Thursday, junior attack Stephanie Cowles added a pair of goals, and junior attack Julia Colley scored once for Torrey Pines.

In a losing effort, Coco O’Brien scored four goals and dished two assists for second-seeded Coronado, which finished the season 19-4 and fell one win short of a repeat appearance in the championship game.

“I just think we were very frazzled in the first half,” Coronado head coach Jessica Battle said. “Second half, we came out a new team, but it was too little, too late.”

Torrey Pines led 6-4 at halftime, and the Falcons took a three-goal lead at 9-6 after Becky Trees scored her third with 7:10 remaining in regulation. O’Brien scored back-to-back goals with 4:28 and 3:25 remaining, but the Islanders couldn’t get the equalizer.

“I’m so proud of my team right now,” Bourquin said. “We just fought hard and weren’t willing to give up.”
