SoCAL GIRLS: Torrey Pines Ends LCC's 45-game SD Win Streak
Sophomore middie Katie Trees registered a game-high six points on five goals and an assist, and sophomore attack Anna Knowles scored the go-ahead goal with 5:34 remaining in regulation, as Torrey Pines rallied to upset No. 9 La Costa Canyon, 11-10, in a CIF-San Diego Section game Monday night.
Senior middie Becky Trees added three points on two goals and an assist to help the Falcons end the Mavericks’ 45-game winning streak against San Diego Section competition.
La Costa Canyon suffered its first loss to a San Diego Section team since March 30, 2007, when the Mavericks lost 13-7 to Poway.
Knowles and senior attack Keely O’Brien each added a pair of goals, and senior middie Alexa Golden dished a pair of assists for Torrey Pines (14-6), which has won its final four regular-season games.
In defeat, senior middie Jackie Candelaria scored five goals for La Costa Canyon (14-4), which had its 11-game winning streak snapped.
La Costa Canyon led 10-8 after Candelaria scored her fifth goal with 11:58 remaining in regulation. But Torrey Pines rallied behind Becky Trees, who scored back-to-back goals with 9:11 to play and with 8:05 remaining to pull the Falcons even.
Knowles then scored the go-ahead goal, giving way to more than five minutes of intense, scoreless lacrosse.
“We played like I knew we could all year,” Torrey Pines head coach Amanda Bourquin said. “All-around, we played really hard, we played with passion and we played for each other. I’m extremely proud of this group. It was a hard-fought win.”
