SoCAL BOYS: Torrey Pines Rolls Past Cathedral Catholic, 11-4

March 14th, 2010

Sophomore attackman Kevin Hurt scored a game-high five goals to lead Torrey Pines to an 11-4 victory over Cathedral Catholic in a CIF-San Diego Section game Saturday.

Sophomore attackman Sean Doyle added four points on a goal and three assists, senior middie Erik Myers finished with three points on two goals and one assist and senior middie Bryce Condon scored twice to help the Falcons (1-0) win their season opener and avenge last year’s upset loss to Cathedral Catholic.

Junior middie John Wilson scored once to round out the offense for Torrey Pines, which led by as many as eight goals in the fourth quarter.

Defensively, senior goalie Alex Perkins saved 13 shots.

In defeat, four players all scored once for Cathedral Catholic, which fell to 1-1.

Torrey Pines took an early lead, which it never relinquished. The Falcons led 3-0 at the end of the first quarter, 5-2 at halftime and 8-3 at the end of the third quarter.

Condon’s second goal of the day with 5:58 remaining in regulation gave Torrey Pines its biggest lead, 11-3.

“We knew we needed redemption, and we knew if we won this game it would set the tone for the rest of the season,” Perkins said. “I think we, for the most part, played pretty well. We started off a little slow and had trouble possessing the ball. But we got it together in the second half.”
