MLL: Toronto Overcomes Denver Outlaws in '09 Title Game

August 23rd, 2009

Attackman Shawn Williams scored the game-winning goal with 45 seconds remaining in regulation to give the Toronto Nationals a 10-9 victory over the Denver Outlaws in the 2009 Major League Lacrosse championship game Sunday afternoon at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md.

Williams took a feed from Joe Walters and buried a low shot from directly in front of the cage to put Toronto ahead to stay. The Nationals then regained possession and effectively ran out the clock.

Toronto won its first MLL title in its first year in operation in front of a crowd of 7,003.

Denver has now lost in the championship game in two straight and three of the last four seasons. The Outlaws have never won the title.

Jeff Zywicki had a team-high four points on three goals and an assist, Williams and John Grant Jr., each added three points on two goals and an assist, and Merrick Thompson scored twice.

In the cage, Doc Schneider and Brett Queener combined to save 23 shots.

For Denver, Brendan Mundorf registered a game-high five points on three goals and two assists, and Josh Sims scored twice. Goalie Jesse Schartzman saved 14 shots.

The Outlaws led 5-4 at halftime, 8-7 at the end of the third quarter and 9-8 after Sims scored a man-up goal midway through the fourth quarter. But they couldn’t hang on.

Williams scored the equalizer, his first of the game, off a feed from Zywicki with 4:30 remaining. That set the stage for his game-winner in the final minute.
