ID BOYS: TVLL Semifinals: Timberline Edges Centennial, 6-5
May 21st, 2010
Junior middie Levi Reynolds scored the go-ahead goal with 1:38 remaining in regulation to lead second-seeded Timberline to a 6-5 victory over third-seeded Centennial in a Treasure Valley Lacrosse League semifinal Thursday.
Reynolds scored an unassisted goal from about 10 yards, his second of the game, to give the Wolves (14-6) a lead they would not relinquish. With the victory, Timberline advanced to the league championship game for the second straight season.
The defending Idaho state champions will next face top-seeded Boise in the league title game on Saturday, May 22, at 1 p.m., MDT, at Eagle High School. In the teams’ only regular-season meeting, Boise beat Timberline, 9-8, in overtime on May 15.
“Boise’s a great team,” Timberline head coach Tom Blanchard said. “They’ve got good coaching, and whenever we get together with Boise it’s always a close game. It’s a coin flip.”
On Thursday, sophomore attackman Andrew Rusin, sophomore attackman Nash Cantrell, senior middie Cody Cantrell and junior middie Nick Cox all scored once to round out the Timberline offense.
In the cage, sophomore goalie Keven Brown saved 15 shots.
In defeat, Dallin Wilkes scored three goals for Centennial (11-7), which had its run of five straight league championship game appearances snapped. This will be the first time since the 2004 season that Centennial will not be playing in the league title game.
The game was tied, 2-2, at the end of the first quarter, Centennial led 4-3 at halftime and the game was tied, 5-5, at the end of the third quarter.
The teams played more than 10 minutes of scoreless lacrosse in the fourth before Reynolds fired home a high shot to give the Wolves a 6-5 lead.
After the goal, Centennial had a man-up opportunity in the final minute of regulation, but the Patriots couldn’t score the equalizer to force overtime.
“I’m really proud of our guys,” Timberline head coach Tom Blanchard said. “Centennial’s a tough team, and we’ve always played really close games with them. Our guys stepped up when we needed them to, and now we’ve got a chance to redeem ourselves against Boise.”
