WASH GIRLS: Sydney Whitaker Commits to Carthage College
April 6th, 2010
Bainbridge Island senior attacker Sydney Whitaker has committed to play NCAA Division III lacrosse at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis.
At Carthage, Whitaker will be playing under head coach Lauren Hume, who played at Bainbridge Island as a middie from 1998 to 2001 under current Spartans head coach Tami Tommila. Hume went on to play NCAA Division III lacrosse and soccer at Redlands in Southern California.
Hume said Whitaker has many of the attributes she is looking for in a future college player.
“She’s definitely a shooter,” Hume said. “She’s got a strong shot. She can handle the ball well, but I think she has potential to grow as a lacrosse player, and I think at the collegiate level, she’s going to improve over time. She’s just going to continue to get stronger and stronger.”
Hume added that she believes Whitaker will successfully make the transition to the college level of play.
“With the experience she has traveling from coast to coast playing in tournaments, she’s faced tougher competition,” Hume said. “She’ll fare just fine.”
