ORE BOYS: OHSLA Quarterfinals: Sunset Routs Liberty, 15-4

May 29th, 2010

Junior middie Kyler Bruno registered a game-high six points on two goals and four assists to lead Sunset to a 15-4 victory over Liberty in an Oregon High School Lacrosse Association quarterfinal Friday night.

Senior attackman Ben Dill added five points on four goals and one assist, and junior attackman Curtis Eschman and senior middie K.J. Paik each had four points on three goals and an assist to help the Apollos (20-2) win their 18th straight and stay unbeaten against Oregon competition. Sunset, which is 18-0 this season against teams from Oregon, has advanced to the state semifinals.

The Apollos will next face Lake Oswego in a rematch of both teams’ season opener. Sunset won that game, 10-6, on March 15. The Sunset-Lake Oswego semifinal will be played at 6 p.m., PDT, on Wednesday June 2 at Tualatin High School.

“It’s just going to be another exciting match-up between two great teams,” Sunset assistant coach Martin Wright said. “It will just be a matter of who has improved the most.”

On Friday, junior middie Jake Quiring, junior attackman Nate Berry and senior middie Kevin Eames all scored once to round out the offense for Sunset.

On the defensive end, senior goalie Jack Regan saved eight shots, and the Apollos held their opponent to under seven goals for the 19th time this season.

Liberty had its eight-game winning streak snapped and finished the season 15-3.

Sunset led 6-1 at the end of the first quarter, 9-3 at halftime and 11-3 at the end of the third quarter.

“It was just another dominant performance,” Wright said. “Jack Regan is possibly the best goalie in the state of Oregon right now. He is playing on his head.”
