ORE BOYS: Sunset Advances to First-Ever State Title Game

June 3rd, 2010

Junior attackman Curtis Eschman registered a game-high five points on three goals and two assists to lead Sunset to a 12-5 victory over Lake Oswego in an Oregon High School Lacrosse Association state semifinal Wednesday in the first game of a doubleheader at Tualatin High School.

Senior middie K.J. Paik added four points on two goals and two assists, and senior attackman Nate Berry scored three goals to help the Apollos (21-2) win their 19th straight and advance to the state championship game for the first time in program history.

Sunset, which is 19-0 against Oregon competition this season, will go for its first state title when it faces Lincoln on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m., PDT, at Tualatin High School. It will be the teams’ first meeting this season.

“They’ve got a lot of weapons, and we’ve got to play good team defense against them,” Sunset head coach Jeff Dill said. “If we can play them 6-on-6, we should have good success.”

On Wednesday, senior attackman Ben Dill, senior middie Kevin Eames, senior defenseman Jack Skaggs and junior middie Steve Lutz all scored once to round out the offense for Sunset.

Defensively, senior goalie Jack Regan saved 15 shots.

Lake Oswego, which lost to Sunset for the second time this season, finished the season 15-4.

Lake Oswego led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter, but Sunset controlled the game from there.

Sunset scored three unanswered goals in the second quarter to take a 5-3 halftime lead, and the Apollos then pushed their advantage to 10-5 by the end of the third quarter.

“We played very well,” Jeff Dill said. “We came out a little flat but got going in the second half. There was a lot of sharing the ball, and we shut down their high-power offense. They are a very tough team, and we’re happy to get past them.”
