TEX BOYS: Strake Jesuit Routs Friendswood in THSLL Opener
The Texas High School Lacrosse League’s 2010 season is underway.
In the South District, Strake Jesuit overcame a steady and at times heavy rain to down Friendswood, 15-6, in both teams’ season opener.
Strake Jesuit, the defending Houston Division I city champions and the preseason fourth-ranked team in the state, opened the season with a dominating win over Division II Friendswood. The Crusaders took control early and never were threatened en route to taking a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter.
“We had several assisted goals tonight,” Strake Jesuit head coach Mike Block said. “We did well with our backdoor cutting, and we had some great goals in transition. That’s kind of how we buried them early.”
Strake Jesuit (1-0) led 5-0 at the end of the first quarter, 9-0 at halftime and 14-2 going into the fourth quarter, Block said. Friendswood (0-1) pulled a few goals back in the final 12 minutes against Strake Jesuit’s reserves.
Stats for the game were unavailable because of the rain.
“I’m happy to get a win,” Block added. We didn’t clear the ball very well, and we didn’t pick up ground balls very well. But we had some good lacrosse plays at moments.”
There was supposed to be two games played on THSLL opening night, but the Bowie-Cedar Park season opener in Austin was rained out.
