SoCAL BOYS: Steven Bogert Changes Commitment to PSU

July 16th, 2010

La Costa Canyon senior long-stick middie Steven Bogert has rescinded his verbal commitment to Hofstra and has decided to play NCAA Division I lacrosse at Penn State instead.

Bogert, who helped lead the Mavericks to a 23-0 record and the CIF-San Diego Section title, said he didn’t want to pull out of his commitment to Hofstra but was forced to because of financial considerations. Hofstra is a private school, and tuition there is significantly higher than at Penn State, which is a public university.

“I love Hofstra,” Bogert said. “I love the coach and players. They accepted me as a family. The problem is financially, my parents and I would not have been able to afford that big of a loan. I’m still torn up about it.

“I love Hofstra, but I have to do what’s best for my family and what’s best for me down the road.”

Bogert said he liked Penn State for everything it has to offer.

“Overall, it’s a full college experience,” he said. “There’s Big 10 football, and I love the school spirit. I like the atmosphere, and I like that coach (Jeff) Tambroni has a vision for the program.”
