In the first high school game to played in the United States in 2010, junior attackman Hunter Stinson added three goals to help the Cougars (1-0) win a tough season opener.
Senior middie Will Mills, junior middie David Escott and junior middie-attackman Thomas Billeaut all added a goal apiece for St. Thomas More.
In defeat, senior attackman Nick Rocco had a team-high three points on two goals and one assist, and senior attackman Bryce Shepard scored twice for Ocean Springs (0-1), which is based in Mississippi but plays in the LHSLL.
Senior middie Dewy Braa, junior middie Ian Carter and senior attackman Steven Carlin all scored once for Ocean Springs.
Defensively, sophomore goalie Alston Smith saved 12 shots.
St. Thomas More led 4-1 at the end of the first quarter and 4-1 at halftime before Ocean Springs closed to within 4-3 after a Rocco goal in the third quarter. St. Thomas More, however, responded with a three-goal run to take a commanding 7-3 lead going into the fourth quarter, Ocean Springs assistant coach Mark Rocco said.
“We played OK,” Mark Rocco said. “We need to move the ball more, and we need to get in shape. We’ve got a dozen seniors on the team, and they need to step up.”
