LOU BOYS: LHSLL Playoffs: St. Thomas More Edges Magnet
April 24th, 2010
Junior attackman Saban Sellers scored a game-high four goals to lead St. Thomas More to an 8-6 victory over Caddo Magnet in a Louisiana High School Lacrosse League quarterfinal Saturday afternoon.
Junior attackman Michael Leonpacher added a pair of goals, and senior attackman Joey Boustany and junior middie Ashton Langlinais each scored once to help the Cougars (12-2) win their sixth straight.
Defensively, junior goalie Andrew Broussard saved 13 shots.
With the win, St. Thomas advanced to next week’s state semifinals, where they will face the winner of Saturday afternoon’s Brother Martin-Baton Rouge Catholic game. The semifinals will be played at Pan-American Stadium in New Orleans next Saturday, May 1.
Caddo Magnet finished its season 3-9.
The game was tied, 1-1, at the end of the first quarter, St. Thomas More led 4-3 at halftime and the Cougars led 5-4 at the end of the third quarter.
St. Thomas More then used a decisive three-goal run to start the fourth to put it away. By the time Leonpacher scored his second of the day, the Cougars led 8-4. Caddo Magnet didn’t give up, scoring two down the stretch, but it was too little, too late.
I thought the team played OK,” St. Thomas More head coach Mike Guidroz said. “Caddo was much better than they were earlier in the season. I think the heat affected us. We were a little sluggish for a while.”
