SoCAL BOYS: St. Margaret's Episcopal Edges Rancho Bernardo
March 13th, 2010
Senior goalie Jeff Askin saved 14 shots to lead St. Margaret’s Episcopal to a 3-2 victory over Rancho Bernardo in a California Interscholastic Federation game Friday night.
Senior attackman Johnny Murayama scored the go-ahead goal with 1:43 remaining in regulation, as the Tartans (3-0) won their third straight to start the season in an unusually tight defensive battle.
Sophomore middie Matthew Duenes finished with a team-high two points on a goal and an assist, and sophomore middie Chris Bauer had a goal to round out the offense for St. Margaret’s.
In defeat, Army-bound senior Austin Bokmeyer had a goal and an assist, and Denver-bound junior Tyler Ekeroth scored once for Rancho Bernardo, which fell to 1-1.
Junior goalie Zach Weaver saved 10 shots for the Broncos.
Rancho Bernardo led 1-0 at the end of the first quarter, the game was tied, 1-1, at halftime and the score was tied, 2-2, at the end of the third quarter.
The teams then played more than 10 minutes of scoreless lacrosse in the fourth before Murayama put the Tartans ahead to stay. Rancho Bernardo had one final possession but couldn’t get off a shot to send the game into overtime.
“That was a tight game,” St. Margaret’s assistant coach Bryan Harney said. “I thought we really came together in the second half and started playing the way we know we can play. This was our first test, and I think we passed it.”
