LOU-TEX BOYS: Southlake Carroll Downs Loyola-Shreveport

February 21st, 2010

Junior middie Paul Stevenson registered a game-high six points on five goals and one assist to lead Southlake Carroll to a 12-8 victory over Loyola-Shreveport in a Texas vs. Louisiana interstate game Sunday morning in Shreveport.

Sophomore middie Matt Pearce added three goals, junior attackman Brian Olson finished with three points on two goals and one assist and senior middie Tom Barnhart had three points on a goal and two assists to help the Dragons (4-0) win their fourth straight and complete a three-game sweep of their weekend road trip.

Junior attackman Jason Christensen had a goal to round out the scoring for Southlake Carroll, which beat Captain Shreve, Birmingham Hoover and Loyola-Shreveport over the last two days.

Defensively, senior goalie Pat Schmidt saved 13 shots.

Defending Louisiana state champion Loyola-Shreveport (0-1) lost its season opener and had its 10-game winning streak snapped. Junior attackman Austin Mathias scored a team-high three goals, freshman attackman Austin Melson had three points on two goals and an assist and senior attackman J.T. Terzia scored twice for the Flyers.

Loyola-Shreveport led 5-2 in the first quarter, but the Flyers went down two men for three minutes after taking two non-releasable, unsportsmanlike-conduct penalties. Southlake Carroll scored three goals on the ensuing man-up advantage to tie the game, 5-5.

Loyola-Shreveport also lost its standout face-off middie, Thompson Barro, who was ejected during the first-quarter scuffle. After that, Southlake Carroll dominated on face-offs and eventually took a 7-5 halftime lead and a 10-7 lead by the end of the third quarter.

Southlake Carroll led by as many as five goals in the fourth after Stevenson scored his fifth to put the Dragons ahead, 12-7, with 8:40 remaining. Loyola pulled a goal back six minutes later, but that was as close as the Flyers could get.

“It was a good trip for us,” Southlake Carroll head coach Josh Pico said. “It was another good team effort, with contributions from a lot of different players.”

Loyola-Shreveport head coach Mike DeVita said he wanted his team to show that Louisiana could hang with Texas.

"I think we held our own, but we still have a lot to prove," DeVita said. "They're still a little ahead."
