July 16th, 2010
ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Australian attackman Richard Grant registered a game-high four points on three goals and one assist to lead the unbeaten Sonoma Leghorns to a 9-5 victory over the Orange County-based 4 Leaf Lacrosse Club in an Adrenaline Shootout South Swell Group 1 first-round game Friday morning at Sonoma State University.
Middies James Burton, Blake Olsen and Matt Samet all added a goal and an assist to help the hometown Leghorns (2-0-1) move into a first-place tie with San Diego LaxDawgs Brown atop the group. This is the best start ever at an Adrenaline event for the Sonoma-based club.
Sonoma and San Diego (2-0-1) each lead Adrenaline (1-1-1) and Austin ATX (1-1-1) by one game with two to play in the first round. The top two teams in the group advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Middies Bradley Nelson and Alex Badulow and attackman Jake McIntyre all scored once to round out the offense for Sonoma.
In defeat, attackman Steven Koressel finished with a team-high three points on two goals and one assist, middie Tommy Andrews scored twice and middie Dustin Marinelli had a goal for 4 Leaf (1-2), which fell into fifth place and is likely out of contention to reach the championship bracket.
Sonoma led 3-2 late in the first half before it used a decisive 6-1 run to take control. Nelson, McIntyre and Olsen all scored in the final two minutes of the first half to give the Leghorns a 6-2 lead at the break.
After 4 Leaf pulled one back to start the second half, Samet, Grant and Bodulow scored in succession to give Sonoma its biggest lead of the day, 9-3.
“It’s just been good teamwork,” Grant said. “We’ve been moving the ball well on offense.”
