KAN BOYS: Shawnee Mission East Downs Blue Valley West, 9-6

Senior attackman Paxton Gross scored a game-high four goals and added an assist to lead Shawnee Mission East to a 9-6 victory over Blue Valley West in a Lacrosse Association of Kansas game Monday.
Junior middie Max Sweet scored a pair of goals, and junior attackman Clancy Merrill had two points on a goal and an assist to help the Lancers improve to 8-5.
Senior middie Ryan Tuschhoff and junior middie Jack Esberg each had a goal to round out the scoring for Shawnee Mission East.
Defensively, junior goalie Danny Thompson saved eight shots.
Blue Valley West fell to 9-5.
The game was tied, 1-1, at the end of the first quarter, 5-5, at halftime and 6-6 going into the final 12 minutes. But Shawnee Mission East took over down the stretch.
Gross scored the go-ahead goal with 5:09 remaining in regulation to put the Lancers ahead to stay. Esberg scored with 3:40 to play to make it 8-6, and Sweet sealed it with his second goal with 1:50 remaining.
“It’s a pretty big win for us,” Shawnee Mission East head coach Alex Houlton said. “As long as we take care of business, like we should, this should guarantee a No. 2 seed for state.”
