July 25th, 2010
ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Attackman Cedric Rhodes scored the game-winning goal 90 seconds into sudden-death overtime to give seventh-seeded Seattle Starz Navy a thrilling, 7-6 upset victory over the second-seeded Utah Starz in an Adrenaline High School Shootout quarterfinal Sunday morning at Sonoma State University.
Rhodes shook off a defender before making a quick turn and firing a low bounce-shot from 12 yards to put Seattle (4-2) into the semifinals. Seattle will next face third-seeded Arizona Burn Orange at 10:30 a.m., PDT, for the right to play in Sunday afternoon’s championship game.
Rhodes finished with a team-high three points on two goals and one assist for Seattle, which blew a three-goal, second-half lead before recovering in overtime.
Attackman Ben Anderson dished a pair of assists, and attackman Colin MacIlvennie, middie Jackson Lanning, middie Justin Riggins, middie Erik Risa and attackman Barrett Jenness all scored once for Seattle. Middie Nick Peters and middie Curtis Yokoyama both had one assist to round out the offense.
In defeat, attackman Tyler Grogg had four points on three goals and an assist, and attackman Evan Alger finished with four points on a goal and three assists for Utah (5-1). Attackman Chris Severson and middie Mitchell Hatch also scored once.
Seattle led 5-2 at halftime before Utah scored three straight goals to start the second half. Grogg had all three, the last of which coming off a long outlet pass from goalie Peter Hoburg to tie it, 5-5.
Seattle regained the lead when Jenness scored off a feed from Yokoyama with four minutes to play, but Utah equalized again when Hatch finished a feed from Alger with 1:45 to play.
Both teams failed to score on their first possession in overtime before Rhodes ended it with a shot from the left side of the cage.
“He just overcommitted, and I saw I had the angle to get off a shot,” Rhodes said. “I didn’t even really see it go in. Everybody just started screaming.”
