AS: Seattle Green Ends Saskatoon's 24-Game Win Streak

July 25th, 2010

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Middie Ben Director scored a team-high three goals to lead fifth-seeded Seattle Starz Green to an 8-7 upset victory over the top-seeded Saskatoon Scorpions in an Adrenaline High School Shootout semifinal Sunday morning at Sonoma State University.

With the victory, Seattle (6-1) avenged its only loss of the tournament and advanced to Sunday afternoon’s championship game. Seattle will next face third-seeded Arizona Burn Orange, which beat seventh-seeded Seattle Starz Navy in the other semifinal, at 12:30 p.m, PDT.

During the group stage on Saturday, Saskatoon rolled over Seattle Starz Green, 13-4. The Scorpions (6-1), the two-time defending Adrenaline High School Shootout champions, had their 24-game winning streak snapped and lost in an Adrenaline Shootout for the first time since 2007.

On Sunday, Seattle led 8-5 after middie Brandon Todd scored with four minutes left, setting off an excited celebration among his teammates. Saskatoon fought to the end, scoring two to close within one, and the Scorpions had one final chance to force overtime.

But Seattle goalie Merrick Rutledge made a clutch save from point-blank range with about 15 seconds remaining to preserve the win.

“We were a little nervous, but we thought we could take them down,” Director said. “We came out really soft yesterday, weren’t ready to pass and catch and then they came with pressure. Today, we were ready for it.”
