AS: Defending Champs Roll in Adrenaline HS Shootout Opener

July 24th, 2010

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- The two-time defending Adrenaline High School Shootout champion Saskatoon Scorpions opened the 2010 tournament with yet another decisive victory.

The Scorpions, who steamrolled through the 2009 and 2008 tournaments, got off to a quick start, dominated possession and used a lot of accurate shooting to roll past Orange County-based 4 Leaf Lacrosse Club, 15-4, in a Warrior Group first-round game.

Saskatoon (1-0) won its 19th straight Adrenaline High School Shootout game. The High School Shootout is the second division of Adrenaline boys events.

Attackman Ward Spencer had a game-high eight points on six goals and two assists, attackman Brad Schnitzler scored four goals and attackman Adam Saunders added three points on a two goals and one assist.

Other multiple-point offensive contributors for Saskatoon included middie Bryton Thorarinsson, who had three points on a goal and two assists and attackman Steve Caswell, who had a goal and an assist. Middie Derrek Neufeld scored once, and middies Kyle Looman, Jon Ronn, Ryan Potie, Levi Dziadyk and defenseman Calvin Moroz all had one assist.

In defeat, middie Pierce Findlay scored three goals for 4 Leaf (0-1), which lost its tournament opener.

Saunders opened the scoring early, and the rest of the first half belonged to Spencer, who scored six unanswered goals to give the Scorpions a 7-0 lead.

4 Leaf closed to within 8-3 early in the second half, but Saskatoon answered with a seven-goal run. Schniztler scored all four of his goals during that stretch to give the Scorpions their biggest lead of the game, 15-3.

“We were looking to set the tone, going for that three-peat,” Spencer said. “We wanted to set the tone early and get the offense on rhythm.”
