SAN DIEGO -- Senior attackman Johnny Morgan scored a game-high four goals to lead San Diego Shredderz Elite to a 10-6 victory over the Claremont Spartans in an Adrenaline Challenge Adrenaline Elite Division Group 1 game Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore attackman Brendan Gaughan dished two assists, and six other players scored once for the Shredderz (3-0), who are made up entirely of players from La Costa Canyon.
With the victory, San Diego clinched first place in Group 1 and a spot in Sunday’s quarterfinals.
In defeat, junior attackman Quinton Hamilton and junior middie Mason Pynn each scored twice, and senior middie Jesse King had a goal and an assist for British Columbia-based Claremont (2-1), which is in a three-way tie for second place.
Claremont is tied with Oregon Rhino (2-1) and Arizona Burn Orange (2-1). The second qualifier for the quarterfinals will be determined later on when all the tiebreaker scenarios are tabulated.
Morgan scored San Diego’s first four goals to stake the Shredderz to a 6-3 halftime lead.
Claremont won 10-of-15 face-offs, but San Diego outshot the Spartans 26-17.
“We needed to keep the pressure on them,” Morgan said. “We worked hard throughout the day. We have to play confidently to our own strengths.”
