AS: San Diego LaxDawgs Rally Past Austin ATX in Opener, 9-5
ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Attackman Warren Brody scored a game-high three goals, all during a decisive second-half run, to lead San Diego LaxDawgs Brown to a come-from-behind, 9-5 victory over Austin ATX in an Adrenaline Shootout South Swell Group 1 first-round game Thursday afternoon at Sonoma State University.
Attackman Kyle Runyon added a co-game-high three points on two goals and one assist, middie Dakota Rohlin scored twice and middie Chris Banks dished a pair of assists to help San Diego (1-0) win its tournament opener.
Middie Sergio Flores and attackman Matt Ohara each scored once, and middie Zach Bannon and defenseman Billy Schmitt both had one assist.
In defeat, attackman Jacob Rockwell scored three first-half goals, attackman Nick Ierullo added a goal and an assist and middie Matt Gabriel scored once for Austin (0-1), which dropped its tournament opener.
Defensively, goalie Jackson Grimes saved nine shots for ATX.
ATX twice led by two after scoring quick, back-to-back goals to start each half. But each time the LaxDawgs came back.
With the game tied, 3-3, Ierullo and Gabriel scored in the opening two minutes of the second half to put Austin ahead, 5-3. But the LaxDawgs answered with a game-ending, six-goal run over the final 15 minutes.
Brody scored the game’s final three goals, including a sweet behind-the-back strike with one minute to play to put an exclamation point on the victory.
“We kind of stumbled at first, fell on our face a little bit,” Brody said. “But we got back up and definitely took a few for us.”
