AZ BOYS: Salpointe Catholic Beats Chaparral for First Time
April 24th, 2010
The Salpointe Catholic boys lacrosse team made history Saturday afternoon.
Senior attackmen Cameron Wilhite and Ben Neilson each registered a co-game-high three points on two goals and one assist to lead the Lancers to an 8-3 upset victory over Chaparral in an Arizona Youth Lacrosse League Division I game in Tucson.
The victory marks the first time a team from Tucson has ever beaten mighty Chaparral.
“I can’t be more proud of the way our kids came out and played,” Salpointe Catholic head coach Kevin Krieger said. “We knew it was going to be a tough battle, but the defense did a great job of limiting shots.”
Senior middie Dominic Cozzetti and senior attackman Matt Greenberg each added a pair of goals for Salpointe Catholic (10-2), which has won six straight.
Defensively, senior goalie Erik Carter saved 20 shots.
In defeat, three players scored single goals for the Firebirds (10-2), who had a major letdown following Thursday night’s emotional win over No. 25 Brophy Prep.
Salpointe Catholic led 4-2 at the end of the third quarter before using a four-goal run to take control in the fourth. Greenberg capped it when he scored off a feed from Neilson with 1:45 remaining in regulation to give the Lancers their biggest lead of the game, 8-2.
“Our goalie, Erik Carter, played great between the pipes," Krieger added. "And our midfielders did a great job pushing the ball up the field to our offense, which then took advantage of all the mistakes in Chaparral’s defense.”

Blind Squirrels...
Occasionally find an acorn. Obviously, Chaparral was off their game after the big win against Brophy. Although Salpointe's new coach has these guys playing something that at least resembles lacrosse, they are still a bunch of hacks. Gilbert is going to crush them this weekend and then on Tuesday some Phoenix team is going to have to travel down to north Mexico and knock them out of the first round of the playoffs. Enjoy it while you can boys.
Great State of Maricopa
Obviously you have spent too much time in the Great State of Maricopa to be able to recognize that lacrosse in Tucson has been growning exponentially since probably before you were born. So much for your prediction of Gilbert crushing them. And Gilbert making the playoffs is a fluke since their fans started a fight with a referee after the JV game (because they were bitter).
Exponential?
I'm sorry, but 4 high school teams is not exponential growth - Ahwatukee, Chandler, and Gilbert have 8 teams with a third the number of high schools. Tucson is still Sleepy Hallow. Good win against Gilbert on Senior Day with a playoff berth on the line - they do cheat better than anyone in the league and do get chippy when they loose - no news there. However, if you think you can roll Sauguaro, you not only will fail but you will get beat. They are better than they were at the beginning of the season and have Clay Perry back in the lineup. I'm still predicating a Saguaro win.
Crow
Yum, crow. I guess you made it to the quarterfinals. Too bad for TTV. Next week in Phoenix is a whole new level.
Spellcheck
First of all SPELLCHECK. Second, i guess you have not seen many games as the chippiness always come from the frustration of the opponent not being able to "roll" the "stupid little Tucson team", that has talent, desire and pride. And as far as cheating...take a look at some stat sheets for penalty minutes, far worse for Phoenix teams than Tucson (see last couple lines of previous post). Enjoy your day and will check back tomorrow for some scores.
The Spellcheck Police
Better double check before you start chucking rocks from your high horse (I'm sure you meant "growing" and not "growning" in your first post - but, heh, it reads funnier - or is that more fun?). Also, please read and comprehend before posting emotionally - I accused Gilbert of being good at cheating (especially things that do not draw penalties), not Salpointe. Tried to even give you props for a good game. However, the fact is, Saguaro has four players who can create and score, Salpointe has one. Salpointe may have a good goalie, but I'll take Sauguaro's offense for the win - despite the trip to North Mexico.
One More Thing...
Chaparral won't break a sweat against the other little Tucson team in their game tonight.
