AZ BOYS: Salpointe Catholic Continues Tucson's Win Streak
March 17th, 2010
Tucson Salpointe Catholic continued its hot start on Tuesday night.
Senior attackmen Ben Nielson and Cameron Wilhite each registered a co-game-high seven points to lead the Lancers to a 14-7 victory over Corona del Sol in an Arizona Youth Lacrosse League Division I game.
Nielson scored five goals and added two assists, and Wilhite had four goals and three assists, as Salpointe Catholic won its fourth straight since being promoted to the state’s top flight. The Lancers have yet to lose as a Division I team.
“Our boys played really well,” Salpointe Catholic head coach Kevin Krieger said. “They came out, executed what they needed to execute, did everything we asked for and won the ground-ball battle.”
Corona del Sol (2-2) lost its second straight after winning its first two games.
It has been quite a start to the season for the boys from Tucson. The three teams from the southern part of the state -- Salpointe Catholic (4-0), Tanque Verde (3-0) and Catalina Foothills (2-0) -- are a combined 9-0 this season.
“I’m a little bit surprised about how we’ve been able to come together as a team and jell as fast as we have,” Krieger said.
But Krieger also noted that, “the next few days should really tell us where we are as a team.” The Lancers face Brophy Prep and Chandler in the next week.
