St. Thomas More Junior Attackman Saban Sellers

St. Thomas More head coach Mike Guidroz hesitated before making the analogy.

He wanted to compare his superlative, diminutive junior attackman, Saban Sellers, to former NBA guard Allen Iverson.

But he wanted to make sure he was comparing only their playing styles.

“He’s just nasty creative,” Guidroz said of Sellers, WSL’s 2010 Louisiana Boys Player of the Year. “That little dude – he plays like Allen Iverson played basketball, but without the bad attitude – great kid, great attitude.”

In other words, you’ll see the 5-foot-5, 125-pound Sellers make dodges that break down defenders like AI’s crossover dribble broke the ankles of opposing guards. But you’ll never hear him complain about “practice.”

To the contrary, Sellers has worked diligently since he started playing lacrosse as a freshman.

“He was always really athletic, but he picked it up pretty quickly because he’s really devoted,” Guidroz said. “He works at it a lot, and he really, really loves what he’s doing and spends a lot of time with it.”

Guidroz said Sellers made a significant improvement between his sophomore and junior years – specifically with his knowledge of the game. It was evident on the field, as Sellers led St. Thomas More to its first state championship.

He scored 62 goals and made 19 assists during the year, using his speed, dodges and creative shooting.

“I think his greatest quality is he’s a finisher,” Guidroz said. “He’s a closer – give me the ball, and I’m going to take care of us.”

While small, Sellers is “tough, tough, tough,” according to Guidroz. He has proved he can take a hit and also has shown his toughness in taking faceoffs, riding and playing defense.

And his size won’t stop him from playing at the next level.

“Yes, he can play in college,” Guidroz said. “He would like to play in college, and he’s working on being recruited this summer. He has aspirations to play.”
