MO BOYS: MSLA Playoffs: Rockhurst Tops Parkway Central

May 22nd, 2010

Senior middie Tom O’Leary scored a team-high three goals to lead top-seeded Rockhurst Jesuit to a 14-7 victory over eighth-seeded Parkway Central in a Missouri Scholastic Lacrosse Association Division I quarterfinal Saturday afternoon in Kansas City.

Junior middie Peter Muehlebach added three points on two goals and an assist, and senior attack Joseph Connor and senior middie Colin McKay each finished with three points on a goal and two assists to help the Hawklets (19-5) advance to the state semifinals.

Rockhurst Jesuit, which is 15-0 this season against Missouri competition, will next face fifth-seeded MICDS on Wednesday, May 26, at 5 p.m., CDT, at Lindenwood University. In the regular season, Rockhurst Jesuit beat MICDS, 13-8, on April 3. The Hawklets enter the state semifinals on a seven-game winning streak.

“They’re coming in pretty strong,” Rockhurst Jesuit head coach Jay Coleman said. “I’d say they’re the favorite right now. I realize we’ve already beaten them, but they’re playing pretty well right now.”

On Saturday, Rockhurst Jesuit actually trailed at halftime before turning it around with a 10-goal second half.

Senior middie Henry Crowe had a goal and an assist, and junior middie Joe Morris, senior long-stick middie Aaron Maassen, senior middie Connor Flanigan and senior attackman Nick Julian all scored once to round out the offense for Rockhurst Jesuit.

The Hawklets led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter, and Parkway Central was ahead, 5-4, at halftime.

But it was all Rockhurst Jesuit in the second half. The Hawklets scored five straight goals in the third quarter to take control and take a 10-5 lead going into the final 12 minutes.

“They played really hard, and they came to play,” Coleman said. “We had more bodies. In the second half, we just overwhelmed them. I think they were just exhausted by the time the second half came around.”
