MO BOYS: Rockhurst Advances to 5th Straight DI Title Game

May 27th, 2010

Senior attackman Nick Julian scored the game-winning goal in overtime to give top-seeded Rockhurst Jesuit a come-from-behind, 10-9 victory over fifth-seeded MICDS in a Missouri Scholastic Lacrosse Association Division I semifinal Wednesday night at Lindenwood University.

Julian scored from about three yards off a feed from senior middie Colin McKay to put the Hawklets (20-5) into the state championship game for the fifth straight season. Rockhurst Jesuit, which is 16-0 against Missouri competition this season, will next face the winner of Thursday’s Eureka-Chaminade Prep semifinal.

The Division I state championship game will be played at Lindenwood University on Saturday, May 29, at 1 p.m., CDT. Rockhurst Jesuit will be going for its fourth state championship.

On Wednesday, the Hawklets trailed nearly the entire game but scored in the final minute of regulation to force overtime and then came through in the end.

Julian and senior middie Henry Crowe each had a co-team-high four points on three goals and an assist, and junior attackman Joseph Connor, sophomore attackman Joe Ferber, senior middie Alec Barth and senior middie Connor Flanigan all scored once for Rockhurst Jesuit.

MICDS finished the season 10-7.

MICDS, which hasn’t won a state title since 2005, led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter, 5-3 at halftime and 6-3 when the game went into a one-hour rain delay with 7:58 remaining in the third quarter.

The break benefited Rockhurst Jesuit, which scored back-to-back goals when the game resumed and trailed 6-5 at the end of the third quarter.

MICDS led 9-8 in the final minute of regulation when Crowe scored to draw the Hawklets level and set the stage for Julian’s extra-time winner.

“If there had not been a rain delay, we probably would not have won the game,” Rockhurst Jesuit head coach Jay Coleman said. “It was a game for the ages. It will probably be remembered for a long time. MICDS played great. They left everything on the field.”
