NorCAL BOYS: Robert L. Stevenson Wins 5th Straight Title
Senior attackmen Tyler Allen and Dylan Osborn had two games going on Saturday afternoon.
First, the most obvious, the Robert L. Stevenson strike force were looking to lead their team to victory in the CIF-Central Coast Section Mission Trails Athletic League championship game against Watsonville. There was a subplot, however.
Both Allen and Osborn were vying to finish the season as the school’s all-time, single-season points leader. Osborn led that race by one heading into the game, but the pair finished even at the end.
Allen registered a game-high five points on two goals and three assists, and Osborn scored a game-high four goals to lead the Pirates to a decisive, 15-5 victory over Watsonville to give Robert L. Stevenson its five straight conference title.
The Pirates won their second consecutive MTAL championship, and they had won three straight Santa Cruz County Athletic League titles before that.
Allen and Osborn, meanwhile, each finished the season with 112 points, tied for the school’s single-season record. Robert L. Stevenson has one of the oldest lacrosse programs in California, having started playing varsity lacrosse in 1971.
“It was probably one of our most prolific groups of kids in terms of skill, development and progress,” Robert L. Stevenson head coach Jeff Young said. “It was a really cohesive group of guys, from top to bottom. They kept growing as a team all season long.”
Junior middie Matt Bruckmann added four points on two goals and two assists, and senior attackman Jake Skeen had three points on two goals and one assist for Robert L. Stevenson, which finished the season on a nine-game winning streak.
Watsonville finished the season 13-6 and lost to the Pirates for the third time.
Robert L. Stevenson conceded the game’s first goal but quickly recovered to take a 4-1 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Pirates led 7-3 at halftime and 13-3 at the end of the third quarter.
“I was just so proud of our guys for staying the course and focusing on the task at hand,” Young said. “We knew we were going to be in a dogfight with Watsonville.”
