SoCAL BOYS: Poway Deals Santa Fe Christian First Loss, 6-3

March 17th, 2010

Senior attackman Jack McGarry and junior attackman Conor Duddy each scored a co-team-high two goals to lead Poway to a 6-3 victory over Santa Fe Christian in a CIF-San Diego Section game Tuesday night.

Junior attackman Henry Donahue and junior middie Matt Landon each added goals to help Poway (2-0) win its second straight to start the season and knock the Eagles (3-1) from the ranks of the unbeaten. Junior attackman Connor Sanit and junior middie Chris Verne each had an assist to round out the Poway offense.

Defensively, junior goalie Derek Scozzafava saved seven shots for the Titans.

Poway dominated possession but had trouble finishing, assistant coach Tim McGarry said. The Titans led 4-1 at halftime and were up by as many as five goals at 6-1 late in the fourth quarter.

Before, during and after the game, Santa Fe Christian paid tribute to Chelsea King, the Poway student whose murder has attracted national attention.

“They wore orange-striped sweatbands with her name on it,” McGarry said. “And then after the game, they presented our team with sweatbands and their coach, Dan Kolts, spoke to our team. They had lost a player last year, and he talked about the importance of making something of your life....It was very noble of Dan Kolts.”
