SoCAL BOYS: Patrick Henry Rallies Past Granite Hills in OT, 8-7
March 10th, 2010
Senior middie Scott Ridout scored the game-winning goal midway through overtime to give Patrick Henry a dramatic, come-from-behind, 8-7 victory over Granite Hills in a CIF-San Diego Section game Tuesday night.
Ridout, who finished with a team-high four points on three goals and an assist, scored on a high shot, off-stick side, from about 10 yards to cap a rally from five goals down and set off a wild celebration.
Junior attackman Zack Rice added four points on two goals and two assists, junior attackman Michael Weller had a goal and an assist and junior middies Matt Hartje and Max Breen both scored once for Patrick Henry (1-1), which bounced back from a heartbreaking, one-goal, season-opening loss to Santa Fe Christian.
Defensively, junior goalie Ryan Flaherty saved 12 shots for Patrick Henry.
Granite Hills fell to 1-1.
Granite Hills appeared to be heading for a big victory throughout the first half before Patrick Henry turned it around. The Eagles led 7-2 in the second quarter, but the Patriots finished the game on a six-goal run.
Patrick Henry closed to within 7-3 by halftime and 7-6 by the end of the third quarter, and Ridout scored the equalizer midway through the fourth quarter.
In overtime, Ridout did it again. He took a pass from Hartje, initiated a dodge, beat his defender and fired home the clincher.
“The best thing we do is we have excellent senior leadership and excellent heart,” Patrick Henry head coach Mark Bloomquist said. “Watching Scott fight and watching him take the game over was incredible. He knew we needed a lift, and he took the second half over.”
