WASH BOYS: Overlake Wins 1st Division II State Championship
May 31st, 2009
Junior attackman Devon Schmidt and junior middie Sky Tweedie-Yates each registered a co-game-high eight points to lead the Overlake School to a 17-11 victory over Eastside Catholic in the Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association Division II state championship game Saturday.
Schmidt scored six goals, dished a pair of assists and picked up 12 ground balls, and Tweedie-Yates had three goals and five assists, to lead the Owls (16-2) to the first state championship in the 20-year history of the program.
“We picked today to play our best game of the season against our most formidable opponent,” Overlake head coach Henry Valentine said. “It’s great for the school, it’s great for our boys who have worked hard, and I’m just really thrilled that everything came together and we peaked at the right time.”
Junior middie Scout Tweedie-Yates added four points on three goals and an assist, and senior attackman Geroge Dolack scored three goals for Overlake.
Defensively, junior goalie Chap Grubb saved 12 shots.
“This is an amazing win,” Dolack said. “After three years of losing in the first round of the playoffs, we finally made it.”
In defeat, David Carlton scored a game-high seven goals and added an assist for Eastside Catholic, which finished the season 17-2 and lost its first game against a Division II opponent this season.
Defensively, Michael Rambaldini picked up 10 ground balls.
“We were fighting to get momentum all night, but unfortunately it wasn’t there,” Carlton said.
Overlake led 6-2 at the end of the first quarter before Eastside Catholic closed within 9-7 by halftime. The Owls came out strong in the second half, however, pushing their lead back to five goals at 13-8 going into the final 12 minutes.
“It’s a game of runs,” Grubb said. “We had a run in the beginning, and they hit us back. After (Eastside Catholic’s) run, we came back and stopped them.”
