May 28th, 2009

Junior middie Sky Tweedie-Yates registered five points on three goals and two assists to lead Overlake to a 10-6 victory over King’s Way in a Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association Division II semifinal Wednesday night.

Senior attackman George Dolack added three points on two goals and an assist, and junior attackman Devon Schmidt had three points on a goal and two assists to help the Owls (15-2) win their fifth straight and advance to the state championship game for the first time in school history.

Overlake will face Eastside Catholic in the WHSBLA Division II state-title game Saturday afternoon, May 30, at Memorial Stadium in Seattle at 5 p.m., PDT. It will be the first meeting between the teams this season.

“I couldn’t be prouder of this group of boys,” Overlake head coach Henry Valentine said. “They stuck together from day one. Nobody believed in us but ourselves, and we did what we had to do.”

On Wednesday, junior middie Scout Tweedie-Yates scored a pair of goals, and freshman attackman Joe Dolack and junior attackman Graeme Gulick each had a goal to round out the scoring for Overlake.

Defensively, junior goalie Chap Grubb saved 16 shots.

King’s Way finished the season 15-3 and lost its first game against a Washington opponent. King’s Way’s other two losses came against Oregon schools Grant and Wilsonville.

King’s Way led 1-0 at the end of the first quarter, but Overlake came back to take a 4-3 halftime lead. The Owls then reeled off four straight in the third quarter to push ahead 8-3 going into the final 12 minutes.

“King’s Way is a big, strong, physical team, and they came out to play,” Valentine said. “It really was a duel from wire to wire.”
