July 24th, 2009

Middie Grant Clifford scored a game-high three goals to lead the unbeaten Oregon Rhino Rockets to an 8-6 victory over San Diego RC Carolina in an Adrenaline Shootout boys high school division first-round game Friday morning at Sonoma State University.

Attackman Seth Goddin added a pair of goals, and attackman Chas Blake finished with a goal and an assist to help Oregon (3-0) win its third straight.

Middies Joe Graham and Ryan Hearon each scored once, and attackman Kyle McClintic, middie Ben Ludeman, attackman Ben Hawley and attack-middie Hayden Galante all dished an assist for the Rhino Rockets.

Defensively, goalie Sam Fricke saved 11 shots.

In defeat, attackman Jamie Arnold registered a co-game-high three points on two goals and an assist, and middies Sean Duncan and Conner McFarland each finished with a goal and an assist for RC Carolina (1-2). Attack-middie Alec Demich and middie Andrew Perkins each had a goal to round out the scoring for San Diego.

In the cage, goalie Jacob Graige also saved 11 shots.

In a penalty-filled game dominated by special teams, Oregon scored three goals on man-up situations but allowed RC Carolina to scored three man-down goals. RC Carolina tied the game, 5-5, with 20 minutes remaining in regulation on a man-down goal by Perkins.

However, Oregon answered with a three-goal run to take control. Clifford scored the go-ahead goal with 14 minutes to play. After Goddin made it a 7-5 game, Clifford scored one more with 10 minutes remaining to put the Rhino Rockets up three.

“I feel like we’re pretty deep and solid,” Clifford said. “We’ve had good team D and good team play. We don’t really have star individuals on the team. We play more as a team.”
