Great games last Thursday-plus my humble predictions for finals

I know no team should think ahead to the finals, but I'm not a team...Next Monday I think it will be Lakeridge by 4 over Wilson and LO gets edged out by 2 by a much improved Oregon City team for a LR -- OC final.  Any takers for predictions?

Even if I'm wrong ,I've gotta give props to the TRL and all other leagues for being so strong this year and last year for that matter. Way to go everyone who put so much into your GLax programs. It's been a pleasure to see little seventh graders that have now become the "Seniors" this year. It's been a pleasure to see all these teams come so far for NWLAX these last five years. Way to go parent helpers and all the coaches!!!! You all seriously ROCK!! GLax will only get better and stronger in the future with your help and all the work the kid leagues are doing now. I think the athletes in the NW will soon overcome the very best of the entire nation!! That's "my" real hope and my faithful "prediction" for the furure!

Like I said, a humble but faith filled prediction.

PLAYOFFS

West Linn @ #8 Jesuit

any predictions?

predictions for your games

SMA by 4

Lincoln in OT?

Lakeridge by 10......OK 6

U of J by a bunch.

Reply to myself

WOW ! ! !   Some great games tonight!  For first time ever in the state of Oregon, a round of 16 for Girls LAX!!!.  Congrats to Lincoln on the road at Marist and representing the PIL with force!  Nicely done!

Let's hear it for Sunset taking SMA to overtime!  Very good stuff!

Sherwood gets it's 6 and keeps LR in check, ok, 16 for LR but heck OC gave up more to LR twice this season!  Next year, if it happens, check out Sherwood vs. LR.  Nice work Coach Snyder.

Hmmmmm.....  Jesuit...(remember back when I thought they were most improved....)  Big win over WL but I figured as much.  I wish I could catch Wilson at Jesuit (follow the X) but  if all the games fall on Tue/Thur this week? ( Why?  It would be great to split them up some) it makes it tough to see other match-ups.

Just caught the OC @ Century score.  OC 12 Century 11....WOW again!  Cudos to Century.  What a great turn around from the NL game back in early April.   Gotta love playoffs, right?  I'd like to hear how their match-up went tonight.

Round of 16 + 8 movin' on!

This was actually the second year of OGLA's 16-team playoff structure and I agree with you, it would be better if they split the 8 games into two nights, both from a fan's perspective and insuring that each game featured the highest quality of officiating.

With the dearth of officials, having eight games all going on at the same time means that the better umpires are spread out.  Having four games on one night and four the next would allow for the best umps to work the games.  The bracket could be structured so that one set of games play on Tuesday/Thursday and the others play Wednesday/Friday.  That set-up would also allow for folks to go see some games other than the one involving their favorite team.

In response to your post, SportsFan, I happened to be at the LR-Sherwood game and, no offense to the Bowmen because they tried very hard, but they in no way, shape or form held Lakeridge in check.  The Pacers scored their first goal 12 seconds into the game and were up 3-0 less than 2 minutes in.  They could have scored well into the 20s if their coaches weren't such a class act.

I noticed that you changed your earlier post that offered your predictions for tonight, but you didn't change the subject line.  Are those your predictions AFTER you know the scores of the games?

There were some interesting scores from tonight, some games were blowouts and some looked to be real nailbiters.  I was surprised that the South League didn't come out on top in at least one of their games, especially since Marist & Roseburg were both at home against teams making 2+ hour drives.

Thursday should be exciting with some good games.  I think the Wilson-Jesuit game could be a tight contest.  I'll wait until after the game on Thursday before I make my prediction.

predictions

Actually Laxatk I only altered the Lincoln prediction as to me it was desrving of special recognition.  That's why it has a question mark after it.  It's obvious that nobody could have predicted that outcome.  All the others were as is.  And I seem to be the only blogger here who makes any predictions at any time.  No one else steps up with an opinion before the games but rather make their points after games.  And I only put points on games to make it more difficult to predict outcomes.  At this level games go can a lot of directions because of class act coaches and the diversity of the level of play.

So, go ahead Laxatk, make your predictions for the quarters.  You can leave poiints off if it makes it easier for you.

And I aqree they should spread  both the round of 16 and the quarters over different nights.  Four nights of Lacrosse would be awesome.

strengths/weaknesses

okay, so - top four teams.  what are their strengths, what are their weaknesses?  chime in.  here's what i see as their strengths:

1. LO -  team passing, transitions, swarming defense, cutting/passing to goal

2. LR - draw control, size/strength, the play of two D-1 bound players, goalie

3. W - team spead - especially on mid/attack, aggressive/tenacious play, oh - and Fiona.

4. OC - goalie, improved midfield, options on attack

Weaknesses

I don't think anybody will bite on weaknesses as it would seem too negative.  But I think in general all teams at any given time can display the same weaknesses.  Poor execution and a breakdown of fundamentals.  I know, real brillant.

I agree. When all of these

I agree. When all of these teams are playing their best, they all great. When their fundamentals breakdown is when they experience problems.

rankings

Any predictions on changes for next week's top ten?  Especially within the top 4 now that OC's beaten LO.  These teams are all so close, LO beat LR, Wilson, and OC once each, but lost to OC by 8 the second time?  Wilson beat OC but lost by one to LR this past week.  And OC lost to each of those teams in close games, but then came back to beat LO the second time around.  The rest of league play, and the post season are about to get really interesting.

Playoffs

OGLA has released the brackets for playoffs, and, going by where teams are at right now, I'm seeing a semi with LO, OC, Lakeridge, and Wilson. This really could go to any of these teams. Thoughts?

Brackets and tonight's big game in Lake Oswego, Oregon!!

This year’s brackets are much better than last year’s brackets. Last year was just “jacked up” with the brackets only helping LO with the “coin toss” deal. Putting Lakeridge and Or. City playing each other way too early in the tourney.  LR should have been completely on the other side of the bracket. Just my opinion and I know, “that was LAST year.”
Shouldn’t be anything like that happening this year. Very fair even though #1 isn’t secure quite yet. And, to me it looks like #2 may have a slightly easier time of it unless Marist is as good as their record and upsets whoever is #2 at the end of the season. But like many have commented there are still four or five really good teams that could take the title.
As for tonight at Lake Oswego’s District Stadium-- If Lakeridge goes out and plays like it’s “their” home field too, (since District Stadium was their home field for many years,) they’ll come away with the win. What I mean is, if LR takes charge, gets the lead and does not give it back easily they’ll win. If LO’s middies do what they are capable of doing in transition and if LR doesn’t pressure them all the way up and down the field, meaning if the LR offense plays hard defense too, I believe LO gets the win.
My question for tonight’s game is other than tieing up the series for bragging rights, how much does this game change things for LR or LO. If LR doesn’t win does that move up Or. City to #2? Otherwise, the brackets at the end of the year would probably stay the same as they are now. With either LO or LR separated by the top and bottom of the bracket. At any rate I think LO will be out for blood after the tough game they had against a much improved Or. City team last Friday night.

LO Got their blood aginst Lakeridge on behalf of OC. What next?

I threw down my predictions above. We'll see. OC still moves on in the tourney with their young, and again, much improved team. I think I have them up against LO by 3 Monday. Any other takers on the predictions for Monday next week.

TRL finish

Regarding your last paragraph on LO vs. LR and OC.  The game matters because a win by LO probably means a TRL championship and not a co-champion.  Then with both LR's and OC's last game of the regular season against each other will result in whoever wins taking 2nd and loser taking 3rd in the TRL.  2nd place with two league losses and 3rd place with three.  Does the 1,2,3 finish matter?  Maybe, maybe not, as they're all expected? to advance to the semi's. (Oh TRL #1 is at home and follows the X if a win while TRL 2 and 3 are on the road first round).   Regarding WSL rankings those have no effect on bracketing for state playoffs but maybe could be considered for bragging rights. (before the final whistle blows on the final game of the season)

Thanks

Awe. Good input thanks.

Agreed

I think that at this point all four teams have proven to be very even. In my opinion, any of the top four teams could pull out a win against each other on any given day. I am looking forward to seeing what these teams can do througout playoffs and into semis. It will be a very exciting year! Anything could happen.

Teams to watch out for

St. Marys is a team to watch out for.  They only lost to LR and Wilson by a few and have been beating most everyone else.  I think that based on strength of schedule they should be ranked 5th, the NW teams aren't getting a high enough level of competition to all be ranked so high.

Good for Marist staying undefeated, they might upset a team or two in playoffs.

What's going on with the metro league, sunset, jesuit, westview, and southridge all seem to be pretty competitve with each other, is westview really the top metro?

SMA

I agree regarding SMA as a team not to be taken lightly.  My only issue with them earlier in the year was their sporadic defense.  If that has improved then I can see the threat.

I haven't had a chance to catch any of the metro teams except Sunset early so I really don't have a clue.  I thought earlier in the pre-season I felt Jesuit had really improved but  guess not as much as I figured.

I look forward to Marist in the playoffs and depending on the seeding you're right they will advance in the playoffs but I don't know if I'd consider them winning some games to be an upset necessarily.

Top Games this week

OKAY!  Let's hear it....  Some top games this week.  In the TRL OC @ LO.  A NL is Lakeridge at Wilson.  Let me hear from other posters regarding their top games for the coming week.

For the record I'm taking LO over OC by 4 this week.  Kind of a repeat of their first meeting, although OC fans were big on the fact that they could've won with their starting goalie playing that first match-up.  After the 18-17 LR @ OC game now both goalies are suspect and their D's  are too.

Lakeridge @ Wilson....   Hmmmmm.  If Wilson has some D the game could be close.  Otherwise LR will get 'em by 4 or more?

I would love to hear from some others regarding their predictions or games to watch this week.

Lakeridge/Oregon City

Hard fought game. High fives to both teams! Came down to the last possession. Epic! Huge offensive weapons unleashed. Lakeridge finally played on the offensive side of the field showing exactly what they can do in the future. Still Lakeridge let one, two, maybe three, three point leads vanish. If LR can get out front and keep their leads in the future; by playing hard even with a lead, watch out!

The defenses worked hard throughout. Don't let the score fool ya. There were defensive girls out there workin their hearts out too. There was just an explosion of offensive shots for both goalies to contend with. I wouldn't have wanted to be a goalie in this game. Good job to both girls.

The score could have had a bigger margin considering all the amazing draw controls by Lakeridge but OC battled back each lead.

In conclusion I wonder what Lake Oswego's team learned from scouting the game together?  Oh, they probably don't even look at this stuff. They just "Believe" which is working thus far. Hats off to them.

As to whether GLax is dead in Oryegon, There's lots of GLax left in the season. I don't think GLax is dead quite yet.

LR/OC

To me it was a game of two very distinct halves.  First half the defenses seemed fresh but in the second half tired legs? began to show.  A bunch of one on goalie scores.  Entertaining stuff but not really a total game.  It seemed a common comment in the stands was, where's the defense?  From both sides.  I'm very interested in seeing which teams will be able to adjust going into the second half of the season and play 50 mins of D.  It's been said many times before and many ways;  Defense wins championships.  Oh, and my comment regarding the death of girl's lax in Oregon was in reference to this site and the lack of posting interest.  Where's the juice?

OC/Lakeridge game

Score? Comments?

WOW

OK, now I'm saying it.  Has this forum dried up or what?  Is girls lacrosse dead in Orygone?

Wilson @ LO 9-15

My prediction was a little off as I had picked LO by 3 a week ago but it seems like a long time past now.  Maybe Wilson was a little off themselves.  I can imagine there must be some reason why they went down, like, 9-2, to begin?   What impresses me the most so far this season regarding LO is their DEFENSE and team speed, again I say it, midfield and down in D and speed.  Check me if I'm wrong but so far in the last 2 weeks they have for the most part shut down the "leading scorers" from around town.  OK, maybe not shut downed, but controlled. I'll not be jinxing them at this point and  will keep my other opinons to myself....

The LAX season is maybe about half over, depending on your own team's league play, but with some great match-ups just ahead.   For me over here in the TRL is the 1st time this season Lakeridge @ OC, 04/20.  And, oh yes, Lakeridge @ Wilson 04/29 .  I'll be at those games!

Ya, good question.

I think cause she mistakenly had the most wins 8-1 and, the most minutes, (450min.) accept for a couple girls, and the most shots against her. Plus the mistake of her being 8-1 and not actually 7-2. Who knows. I could be wrong but I think that's the right data.

Save %

I guess at this time I'll go with a true? save % weighted by my own perceived strength of schedule.  I think the league should have a "Goalie of the Year" designation based maybe on a coaches vote.

Just my 2 cents worth.

St. Marys vs.Lakeridge

I can't figue out why LR played "keep away" at the 5 minute mark. Then, when play resumed, St. Marys jumped on LR and scored 3 straight unanswered points in the last 2.5 minutes. It seemed like LR thought they were "running up" the score up before that. The St. Marys Goalie is #1 in the state. Go score LR. She can take it. The game really wasn't even that close. I think LR could have scored several more in the last 5 minutes if they wanted to. LR still got the win even with the 3 quick SM points. Props to SM for not giving up and taking it to LR defense in the last 2.5 minutes.

Also, I was told that Sportability has both, the St. Marys goalie, and the Lakeride goalie as winning the game. The Lakeridge Goalie won the game. So, shouldn't St. Marys be 7-2, not 8-1. I don't know who fixes sportability.

Great game by both teams. This is still a competetive year where more than just the top three teams could win the whole thing. Just my observation up to now.

Just curious

I didn't see the game last night but it does sound like LR's strategy in the last 5 mins was a little unusual but it's a coaches call.  What I'm curious about is how is it figured that the St. Mary's goalie is number one in the state?

Sherwood v Liberty

Liberty beats Sherwood?Didn't see that one coming.

A Message from WSL Editor Nathan Max

Greetings,

This morning, a female lacrosse player in Oregon registered two separate accounts to post comments on WSL as Lake Oswego's Kendall Guthrie. This player, who wrote a comment under the Lake Oswego-Lakeridge game story under one of these accounts, was NOT Kendall Guthrie. WSL has identified the player and notified her that these kind of shennanigans are unacceptable on this web site. Let this be a warning to anyone who wants to pull this kind of nonsense. You are not anonymous. The Editor knows all. Any player who attempts to do this runs the risk of having the Editor inform her coach, the coach of the victimized players, and the Oregon Girls Lacrosse Association of her actions. This is not a joke. Anyone who tries to pull this again is doing so at her own peril. To quote the lyrics of a once popular song: "This is what you get when you mess with us."

All the best,

Nathan Max
WSL Executive Editor

Good Job

Hey Mr. Max,

Nice catch on the "shennanigans." Good to know we have a sharp editor watching people's backs.

ILoveGlax

last night's upset

Congratulations to LO, but I was disappointed. Not about who won, but how about the way the game was played.  I have seen both teams play so much better in other games and maybe it was nerves, or maybe it was just the power of each team on the other in such a huge rivalry game, but it was not as good of a game as it could have been. Both teams have amazing players but something last night was not on. Every goal was well fought for and deserved, but there just seemed to be something missing from either team. I am excited to get another opportunity to see them both play again and see what the result is then.

As far as last night goes, what put LO over Lakeridge, and what they are famous/infamous for, is their amazingly fast transition. When Lakeridge would attempt to drive after a turnover on LO's offensive end, LO would catch up and be ready to defend within seconds, they didn't waste time. It was extremely impressive. Their transition sets them apart and ultimately won the game for them.

I would like to see a rematch between LO and OC, I have faith in OC despite the loss the first time. Games like LO v Wilson and Wilson v Lakeridge are going to be good games, but I am unsure of how either game will come out.

Disappointed?

The two best teams in the state battle to a 10-9 game?   Disappointing?  Sure, they can both play better; against lesser teams.  This is a very common phenomenon in sports, i.e., the semi-final is better than the final, but that's how it can be.  For LO to to prove themselves for most people they will need to beat Lakeridge or OC two more times.  (Wilson twice too?)  Lakeridge will beat OC by 4 their first meeting and the second meeting I'll address later.

Oh, and you get your wish westsidelacrossereader, a rematch between OC and LO occurs at LO on 4/30.  I'm taking LO by 4.  And I'm taking LO over Wilson this Friday by 3.  Oh, and I agree, LO moves very fast to cover the middle and into it's defense as I mentioned in an earlier post.

LO is no longer the underdog, now they're the team to beat.  Let's see how they handle it.

.

Do not get me wrong, the game

Do not get me wrong, the game was indeed  exciting and it was the closest game I have seen in a while. What I saw was not the two teams playing to their full potential. Both teams possess a huge amount of talent and 10-9 was definitely a nail-biter of a game but I am ready for the rematch already.

And as for playing better against lesser teams? I beg to differ. I have yet to see a good game that was also a total blow out. From what I have seen, teams match the ability of their opposition, for better or for worse. When the rivalry is as big as it is between the two schools, there isn't much room for error and there definitely isn't room for petty mistakes because they are more punishable when the competition is that great.

No offense taken

The season is young with some great lacrosse to come.  Regarding your comment,  "I have yet to see a good game that was also a total blow out.  From what I have seen, teams match the ability of their opposition, for better or for worse."  I don't know what games you've attended but I will make a general comment regarding blowouts.  I've attended games where the scores could have been, 30-1, 25-2, or even 40-3.  But fortunately the better programs don't run up scores.  I think some mid-level programs might to give their girls some confidence and to let them have a chance at scoring.  So in the end the high level programs aren't necessarily "playing down" as much as the coach not letting them score over, and over, and over....  Trust me, it's frustrating for the coaches, the players, and the fans to have to play and attend such lopsided games.

I believe that a team can

I believe that a team can play fairly well in a blowout game. However, I also believe a "high-level" team can score over and over and over and still not have played their best. I have seen blowout games where "high-level" teams get sloppy because their opponents are not giving them the proper competition to go hard against. SportsFan and westsidelaxreader both have valid points because games can always go either way for a team.

My updated Top 10

I realize WSL updates on Sundays but here is my Top 10:

1.   Lake Oswego

2.   Lakeridge

3.   Wilson

4.   Oregon City

5.   St. Mary's

6.   Westview

7.   Liberty

8.   Southridge

9.   Sherwood

10. Marist

I'm sure there will be plenty of disagreement but, that's okay, it stimulates thought.

LO @ Lakeridge

With 4 minutes to go in the first half LO lead 5-2.  Then Lakeridge stormed back for a 5-5 halftime tie. And they scored first quickly in the second half for 4 unanswered goals.  In the second half neither team lead by more than 1.  LO went up 10-9 with 2:30 to go and took the draw and played keep away to get the win.  I think the difference between the two teams is LO has better team speed.  Lakeridge has several great scorers but LO covers a lot of ground in the middle on to defense.  The two teams meet again @ LO May 4 before the playoffs begin the following week.

On a side note I noticed Wilson in the stands doing some scouting in prep for next Friday's game.  Should be a doozie.

girls lax

I don't know much about girls lax rules, but it seemed to me like lakeridge couldn't catch a break, not many calls went their way.

But otherwise, hard fought game by both teams.

Girl's Lax

Yah westsidelax you might want to bone up on the rules for Girl's lacrosse.  For the most part the refs do a pretty good job and most fans miss what the ref might see down on the field.  (Part of my joy attending lacrosse games in Oregon is the lack of parental whinning at the refs as most parents don't understand the game well enough to bitch!)  But yes, the refs do make mistakes and we're all hopeful it doesn't affect the outcome of a game.  For me the hardest call to digest is the "free position" call that occurs all too often at the high school level.  More than anything it's a "safety" call in a way.  But at times it can seem like an offensive strategy where a savy player works her way into a foul and gets a stop action free posistion shot on goal.  Lakeridge had their fair share of 8 meter free position shots vs. LO (some teams track this stat, FPSOG).  Calls out and away from goal, midfield for example, don't really have much of an impact on the game unless they are possession changes so "catching a break" isn't much of an issue.

if fans "miss what the ref

if fans "miss what the ref might see down on the field" and you're a fan, how do you know the refs "do a pretty good job"?

Down on the field

Well I've been down on the field and I've been in the stands.  And calling a game from the stands is really difficult especially at some venues.  I guess my basic point is the majority of lacrosse fans don't in general have a good grasp of the rules.  And most fans carry a bias towards their teams abilities and how calls may go against them.  Add those two together, bias and not being on the field, and the fan's call is suspect at best.  So I guess Anonymous I should have said compared to the fans making calls the refs do a better job.  That's one of the reasons I enjoy attending games between teams in which my personal bias is at it's lowest.  A chance to educate myself on what the refs are focusing on.

LO/lakeridge

LO actually scored with about 330 to go, and Lakeridge then won the draw and got a shot off by about 3 mins, but LO controlled the ball from there.  I think the key to this game was shots on goal, LO must have had twice as many as lakeridge.

Wilson/LO game will be interesting because the two teams play such different styles.  Both teams are fast, but use their speed differently.  It'll be interesting to see how LO defends Wilson's key scorers.

SOG's

Actually, LO had 21 shots on goal and Lakeridge 12.  The Lakeridge goalie vastly outperformed the LO goalie with a 52% save percentage vs. 25%.  And for my money Lakeridge and OC have the two best goalies in the state but we're still way behind the boy's side regarding the quality of goalies.  Some day.  If you're into stats Lakeridge had 16 draw controls vs. 12 by LO (which doesn't make sense as I believe DC's should equal goals plus 1, right?).  Regarding how LO will handle players who score (Wilson) they just played two teams with great scorers in Lakeridge and OC.  OC completely shutdown a state leading scorer or scorers when they decimated Century.  Stats can be very misleading.

So, anonymousoregonlaxer, are you picking Wilson to win this Friday vs. LO?

Ya, I agree

It's gotta feel bad to get beat by a goalie with 25% average, only blocking 2, when you as the LR goalie, had over 50% by blocking 11 of 21. Oh well that's GLax.

But you gotta give LO credit. They kept the ball out of the hands of the two best offensive weaponds in the state and thus were able to keep their own SOG's up to twice what LR could muster.

Both teams played hard so keep your heads up. If LR can get the ball to their attack next game look for a very different ending. I can't wait.
