Lacrosse Season:
2009

Brackets and playoffs

Getting caught up in who beat who by number of goals determines who should be in what bracket is crazy.  LO and Lakeridge split the season and ended up tied for 2nd in TRL.  A coin flip decided the seeding for the playoffs.  LO LOST the coin flip and so was placed in the righthand bracket.  To get to the finals LO had to play Wilson, Century, and Lincoln.  All teams with talent and good coaching.  Yes, the lefthand bracket featured the #1 team but that overall bracket was an easier one.  3 of the final 4 teams were from the TRL.  I was at the OC/Lakeridge semi final and the game was lopsided at the half and without DeBruhl in the second half it too would have been lopsided.  OC was not going to be denied in the final regardless of who they played.  And I think them piling the goals on will come back to haunt them next year.

The bracket system worked.

The bracket system worked.  There will always be some team that thinks it got an unfair 1st round match-up.  This year it was Wilson having to meet LO in the opener.  If they didn't lose to Lincoln twice by one goal, they would have met LO in the semis instead. Too bad, but you have to learn to win the close ones.

This season might be the last time that a team dominates like OC did this year (and St. Mary's the previous 2 years).  St. Mary's graduated an exceptional sr. class last year and suffered for it.  They will be back.  OC does it this year.  They may have an off year in 2010, but many thought that of LO this year and look where they ended up, so who knows.  Wilson, Lakeridge, LO, Jesuit, Sunset, Lincoln (and propably some more) will simply reload.  What all these teams have are good coaching, good JV teams and they draw from good youth programs, and they play each other frequently. Undefeated seasons will become increasingly harder to accomplish and that's a good thing!

Sooner or later, running up the score and trash talking will always come back to haunt a team.  It might not be till the following season, bit it will happen.

well.

Normally you don't see evenly matched, higher-ranked teams playing each other first round.

I was at the final game between Wilson and Lincoln, and the refs were giving bad calls (to both sides). I watched the LO vs Wilson game also and Wilson scored one last goal that got called off for reasons that seemed rather unclear in all the last minute craziness of a close game. That sounds a little more like luck than "learning".

I'm not trying to get all defensive and heated up over another team, but a top 5 team doesn't really deserve to be out the first round, just because they lost 2 games.

OC did run the score up pretty high, but it was the championship and some of those girls' last high school game.

and I think that really any team could come out a lot stronger next year, or a lot weaker.

Brackets

This is the way brackets work in all sports. They are set ahead of time, and sometimes the top two end up on opposite sides; sometimes they don't. That's how it works. The top teams hold back in the regular season all the time. I've seen Lakeridge, OC, and LO hold back against the newer teams. However, this was the championship with two strong teams playing each other...LO being the team that's been around for more years. There's no holding back in a championship. Just look at the NCAA DI Championship final score--Northwestern 21, North Carolina 7.

OC vs LO

It should be in LO's face of the score...Lakeridge should have been in the other side of the bracket and should have played OC for the championship....at least Lakeridge was able to stay close to OC in the regular season.  OC outscored LO 34-17 in the regular season compared to 23-13 against Lakeridge.  OC vs Lakeridge would have been a better championship....LO did well, but Lakeridge did better against OC...no team got closer.....

 yeah I agree that Lakeridge

yeah I agree that Lakeridge would've been a way better match. or even Wilson, since OC only beat them by 5 goals. Also Lincoln. even though they got beat by 11 goals, I think they could've handled OC better in the championship.

23 7

hey 23 7 ..all i have to say is: 14-10 and 15-11.  don't rub this in lo's face cause everyone knows that if you had to play last years state champ team in this years final you would have gotten yourselves handled...again.

 umm. what are you talking

umm. what are you talking about?

wilson v. lo game

DID ANYONE SEE ALISSA JOHNSON HAD 6 SIX GOALS AGAINST WILSON!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! wOw. How does she do it does she cheat? or a ball hog?

 23-7. that's all I have to

 23-7.

that's all I have to say.

 wow i wonder who wrote

wow i wonder who wrote this?

haha.

funny how a team still feels the need to be bitter about a game they...won? cool.

Wilson vs LO

Neither.  A lot of her goals come off assists from teammate Megan Swidells #8.  And with a shooting percentage at 60% she makes good decisons.

Final Four Predictions

Lincoln 9 Lake Oswego 7

Anyone else want to venture a guess?

Lincoln over Sherwood

Final Four: Wilson, Lakeridge, Lincoln, and OC

LO vs Wilson

LO vs. Wilson should've gone into overtime. that goal for Wilson should not have been called off.

it was a good game, but you

it was a good game, but you could tell from the sidelines that it should  not have been a first round playoff game.the #3 team playing #5? that's ridiculous. either of those teams could have been in the finals or semifinals.

both teams played hard but in the end, the refs made a huge difference in the outcome. there were a few deciding calls that set Wilson back in the end of the game, mainly the goal that was taken back in the final minute.

congratulations LO. Wilson, you had a great season.

agreed

agreed: the refs don't know how to call anything. the goal clearly hit the net before they blew the whistle

Wilson - LO

Yeah, that was a really unfortunate way for such a close game to end. Congrats to Wilson on a great season, though.  They'll be very strong again next year.

Now that the brackets are

Now that the brackets are out, who are the favorites?

Looks like it's likely to be OC, Lakeridge, Lincoln, and Wilson

If OC is the front-runner, who is going to give them the best challenge?

Challengers?

In OC's side of the bracket, Lakeridge (if they beat LO again on the last day of the season) looks to be the only team that could give them a run.  Marist has a chance to validate their high Laxpower rating, but I don't see that happening.  On the other side of the bracket, Wilson and Lincoln seem evenly matched, with a nod to Wilson.  Wilson's D is starting to click.  They held a high-scoring Lincoln to only 3 goals!  Century is dangerous and advancing to the semis is not out of the question.  Don't forget about Lake Oswego making a run to the championship.  They would have to beat both Wilson and Lincoln.  Though not likely, they are capable of doing it.  My guess is that OC finally wins their championship, but Wilson, if they can advance, has the best chance of upsetting them in the final.

South Teams

The south teams love the competition provided when they play the northern teams. They learn a lot when they do and it was a travesty this year when the OGLA filled up the south division and scheduled no games between the northern teams and south division teams. One writer nailed it pretty much when they noted that Marist and Roseburg are the teams to beat in the south. Marist has one loss and Roseburg has two one goal losses. Each team has beaten Sheldon once this season. Both teams are well balanced in their scoring yet could benefit greatly from some competition from the northern teams

South teams were given the option

At the big meeting in October, the South League was given two options. 1) They could all play each other once and have the rest of their schedule filled with non-league games. 2) They could fill their schedule with all league games by playing each other twice. The coaches and parent reps from the South league CHOSE to fill their schedule with league games and play each other twice.

Yes, but...

It was after Thurston dropped that some teams wanted to add Portland games and denied the opportunity.

South schedule

On the behalf of all south teams I would like to inform laxablast and exlaxplayer that many teams from the south wanted to added a couple of Portland games, especially when Thurston had to drop out. But when requests were sent to OGLA they were declined. There were multiple attempts at adding games.

So after Thurston dropped

So after Thurston dropped out, some South teams tried to schedule games against other teams and the OGLA said no? Or was OWLUA unable to provide coverage on the weekends? It seems that the OGLA should be doing all it can to promote the growth of the game. Did the OGLA decide on the large South league without input from the teams involved?

League reconfiguration

I can't say for sure about OWLUA's role in OGLA's ruling. I would imagine that surely they could've supplied refs for at least one or two games, especially if the Portland teams hosted. As far as I know OGLA did not confront coaches/parent reps about adding the teams to the league. It was predictable because it does not make sense to add Corvallis and Crescent Valley to a Portland league, along with Bend. Though a general consensus here in the south is that West Salem should have been bumped up to a Portland league. Most likely the TRL because that would make each league a 7/8 team league. In general TRL is the closest too. True, the majority of the South is in Eugene, the drive for Roseburg and West Salem to play one another is extensive. Whereas if West Salem was bumped up to TRL the average drive would be around a hour.

I think each team is allowed

I think each team is allowed up to 18 regular season games. Every South team is playing only 14, all league games! There was plenty of opportunity to play other teams.

We played Wilson recently,

We played Wilson recently, and number 12, Fiona Dearth, was definatly a stand-out. She has improved since last season and she is only getting better this season. She made elite meaning she is one of the top players in the state. With her skills, I think Wilson will definatly pose a major threat to Lincoln next week.

I heard OC's seconded leading

I heard OC's seconded leading scorer, Maddie Garcia, took a really bad blow to the head on Monday's game against West Linn. From the sounds of it I assume she won't be playing in their game versus LO tomorrow. I wonder how that is going to affect the outcome.

ouch

that would happen to maddie

maddie garcia is a rock. she

maddie garcia is a rock. she is an incredibly solid player, i doubt anything will keep her off the field, especially in a game like that. also, rumors and name dropping shouldnt be tolerated here, keep it clean

Well deserved move-up for

Well deserved move-up for Lincoln.

rankings

Jesuit is a very good team, from what I've seen of them I'm surprised they lost to Sunset. They deserve to be behind Wilson in the #6 spot. Southridge should replace St. Mary's at #10.

Dude, Jesuit is the most

Dude, Jesuit is the most legit team that I've seen in quite awhile. Seriously, as an unbiased fan, they are probably one of the best-if not the best-teams in the league. They deserve to be much higher in the rankings.

Jesuit

#6 is a good place for them - they're not better than any of the 5 top teams. However, they might move down as they lost to Southridge this week. Katherine Bruce pretty much carries that team. They're very good, though. Should be interesting to see how far they go in the playoffs.

Playoffs will be tough for

Playoffs will be tough for Jesuit.  If they win Metro, they get O.C. in the second round.  If they take second, they get to meet either Lincoln, Wilson or Lake Oswego.  With either option they get blasted in the second round, but still not bad for a 1st year varsity program.  Look out for Jesuit next year!

Schools with boys AND girls teams

Do you think having a girls team improves the boys team?

Maybe having a boys team

Maybe having a boys team improves the girls team.

I don't think that any of it

I don't think that any of it relates because the OC girls team is unstoppable and the OC boys team is horrible. I think it just depends on the idividual team and their players.

Seriously?

Why is Sunset ranked 5th? The only respectable win was against Jesuit, barely. And why on earth is St Mary's still on here? I think it has been proven they aren't the team they once were. Sheldon hasn't played anyone worth talking about so that 7-0 mark it nothing to be impressed with. Wait until they play Marist or Roseburg then we'll see what they can do.

Roseburg & Marist results may

Roseburg & Marist results may not mean much. No South team plays any other teams but those in the South league, making it hard to compare. Last year, the South league champion lost to the 4th place PIL team 15-4 in a game that wasn't really as close as the score. Any rankings are just a guess and until the South teams get back to playing other teams that won't change. It will be interesting to see how they fare in the playoff brackets. Probably not very well. The current rankings are pretty accurate for the 1st five. After that, it's a crapshoot.

West Linn

LO proved that West Linn is not legit (yesterday's score was 16-2). They need to get out of that coveted number 4 spot. To be filled by......?

agreed. also, both lincoln

agreed. also, both lincoln and lakeridge beat wilson in the last two days, they were both close games, but that should have an effect on the rankings

Both of those games were won

Both of those games were won in the last few minutes. They could have been anyone's.

A win is a win regardless of

A win is a win regardless of the score.

But it proved that Wilson can

But it proved that Wilson can keep up with the best.
